Jeannette Green Grade 6 Victoria PIONEER CHRISTMAS It was early one morning when the pioneers had nothing to do. They knew it was Christmas but they did not know what to do. Suddenly the little girl came with evergreen branches and put them around the fireplace. Then everybody thought it would be good to get everything fixed up for Christmas. The mother started baking a lot of things for Christmas. The father went to the barn and killed a chicken for a Christmas meal. The son went out and killed some rabbits. When everybody got back into the house with the thing they found they had so much food they thought they would ask their neighbours to come and have a Christmas meal with them. So they did. The neighbour brought a big evergreen tree and candles • to light up the tree. It was the best Christmas they ever had. All of the family would get together and have a big meal. They would come in sleighs with the bells ringing. It was a time when the men and women would find out the recent happenings of the area. Most decorations were made by hand by the women and were hung on the tree. When dinner was done they would all gather around the fireplace and maybe tell stories about other Christmases, then they would 0 outside get in their horse and cutters, 43 put a blanket over their legs and head for home. I wish it was still the pioneer days. By: Gordon Farrish Age 12 Brookside PIONEER CHRISTMAS Long ago when time began Christ was born in Bethlehem Lying in the manger without a weep Lay Jesus Christ fast asleep. On Christmas Eve carolers would sing and all the Christmas bells would ring. Stockings were hung by the fireplace and on every child would be a smiling face. Little elves were making toys for all the little girls and boys Santa would swing down the chimney with care And hope that a fire wouldn't be burning there. Many years have past since the pioneer days But we still feel the spirit in the very same way Children's eyes today as children of the past Will have a Christmas twinkle that will forever last. Ann Leeking St. Mary's School Grade 8 A CHRISTMAS IN ' PIONEER LIFE We would start out the festive season with trimming the Christmas tree and making the decorations as for example, stringed popcorn, candles, and acorns. - These decorations made Christmas what it really means. All day we would have carolers coming to sing for us and everyone would be happy all day long. When Christmas morning would arrive, we would open' our presents and have another festive day.
