Down here - with all the hot weather we have been having, the merchants and the powers that be, have certainly created a beautiful "Christmas in July". Can you picture our Courthouse Park in our hottest month decorated in the Christmas theme? The large pictures four feet by five feet that lined both sides of West Venice Avenue, are this year decorating the double driveway to the Venice Civic Centre. Before setting them up this. year, they were sorted out - for wearand tear - and the poor ones touched up or repainted. This was done by the Art League, who created these lovely Christmas scenes many, many years ago. They are on masonite with a frame of angle iron (foil covered). The pictures were of oil, acrylic or enamel and at nearly five feet square were simply beautiful. The main driveways in and out of the Civic Centre made a fine new setting for these pain- tings - some of them created by well-known artists, many of whom are quite famous in their field. Some of them, you can see, were done by Sheila Richards elected Sheila Richards of RR 3 Brussels was elected president of the Blyth Centre for the Arts recently at the organ ization'.s... „annual„ meeting in Blyth's Memorial Hall. She replaces Blyth publisher Keith"Roulston, a founder of the Blyth Summer Festival, who will remain on the board. Audience figures are up for the 1978 fourth season of the theatre, artistic director James Roy told BFCA members and he said Blyth is the only summer theatre in Ontario that is doing original Canadian, locally oriented shows. The . director who has guided the Blyth theatre since its beginning said he plans to leave his post after the 1979 season. He cited the installation of air conditioning, with the aid of a, Ministry of Culture and Recreation grant as making a major improvement. Con- struction is underway this winter of a number of important fire safety improvements to the hall. Box office receipts for the 1978 summer season were in the neigh- bourhood of $43,000. The Blyth Centre board has a deficit of $5,000- and fund raising efforts to eliminate it are con- tinuing, outgoing president Keith Roulston reported. A winter program is operating successfully, and it includes Saturday movies for kids. Along with the new president Mrs. Richards, the executive of the board includes newly elected vice-president Lynda Lentz of Belgrave, secretary Bev Katzin of RR 3 Blyth and treasurer Brock Vodden of Blyth. Other directors are Betty Battye, Cenetta Bainton, Jim Lawrie, Helen Gowing and Mr., Roulston all of Blyth, Carol Bale and Marion Zinn of Lucknow, June Hill and John McKibbon of Goderich, Susan White and Rob Tetu of Seaforth. And so it goes. It is called progress. The Civic Centre building is just lovely. It is the size which had been in the planning for Goderich - and it ins used continuously. It is not set in an athletic centre as ours would have been - perhaps we were trying to contain too many activities in the one building and place. In our case this seemed necessary - a giant swimming pool, especially for training for the Olympics - as would be the running track on the outdoors' perimeter. Other. large areas were especially for meetings, senior citizen rooms; dining rooms, (suitable In a special ceremony held at Victoria Public School last Thursday afternoon, these tweenies New Brownieswere enrolled into the fourth Goderich Brownie Pack. Iff each group had raised money towards their share of the footage, we might have had this centre today but I guess there's no use crying over spilled milk - but, a great big "E" for EFFORT should be awarded to those who tried so hard - especially Mike Dymond. Thanks, Mike - you knew you were up against great odds at the start - but a great many people will realize they have cut off their noses to spite, homely faces. Well, I shouldn't be bitter but it does hurt when I see what people can do with their un- feeling thoughtlessness. I can only hope our younger generation will not let this happen to THEIR younger generations. You know I really miss "Port of Goderich" and all its nice, friendly people. I am trying to keep busy - but I can't help worrying when watching the weather pattern or map each Martha Rathburn ap- pears weekly in 'The Signal -Star night. The hot weather here is most unusual they tell me. I wonder about it the whole time I'm here! I have one painting finished and another well underway. I've started into art lessons again - which proves you're never too old! It is just great to have a place where you can set up and work for several hours. Mac's Milk 281 BAYFIELD RD. Which reminds me - the pepper trees are loaded with bright red berries but I haven't seen any robins - drunken or otherwise, yet. Perhaps they wait until the berries are ripe -ripe before starting their orgy. There are seeds on a lot of trees now - but there are still a great many trees in flower. By the way, I find gasoline is costing almost as much as at home, although a full tank is about two to three dollars less than up north. I expect to be travelling a little =we after the holiday.
