Many motorists will be/
purchasing gasoline and
motor oil by the litre
beginning in January,
1979. The metric con-
version of service station
pumps to dispense in
'litres instead of gallons
will be a gradual process,
scheduled to be com-
pleted by the end of 1980.
The petroleum industry
plans to convert pumps
first in the major
population centres
following a plan
developed by their metric
b;ycrsion sect ,r.
crtrrt1ttee and published
two years ago by Metric
Commission Canada.
A tank fill -up may vary
from less than 50 L for
small cars to over 80 L for
large ones. Results of oil
company test programs
in Canada and the United
States using service
station pumps dispensing
in litres have shown that
motorists-, adapted
quickly to the
changeover. Most drivers
Continued to buy gasoline
in terms of a tank fill -up
or the't•number of dollars
worth -they wanted.
Other -changes will be
seen at service stations.
Motor oil will be sold in
litre containers, and
other items will even-
tually be in metric -size
packages.

Old age security
pensions going up
Health and Welfare
Minister Monique Begin,
recently .announced
increases in the Old Age
Security pension,
Guaranteed Income
Supplement and Spouse's
Allowance, to be effective
in January 1979.
Based on the cost of
living, these increases
represent the twenty-first
quarterly escalation
since October 1973, as
provided for in the Old
Age Security Act. The.
new rates for the
Guaranteed Income
Supplement and Spouse's
Allowance include the
special $20 increase,
recently approved by
Parliament, which will be
paid into each household.
The basic Old Age
Security pension will rise
in January to $167.21
from the present $164.74.
The Guaranteed
Income Supplement is
paid to pensioners whose
income, ,apart from the
Old Age Security pension,
is limited. The amount of
the supplement varies in
relation to the amount of
income.
The maximum
Guaranteed Income
Supplement for a single
person, or a married
person whose spouse is
not a pensioner and is not
receiving a Spouse's
Allowance, will go up in
January to $137.28 from
its current $115.55. The
maximum supplement
for a married couple,
both pensioners, will
increase to $114.15 each
from $102.61.
Thus, the new monthly
total at the single rate for
persons receiving both
the basic Old Age
Security pension and
maximum Guaranteed,
Income, Supplement will
be $304.49, up from the
current rate of $280.29.
For a married couple,
both pensioners, the
combination of the basic
pension and ."maximum
supplement will provide a
monthly payment of
$281.36 each or $562.72 for
the couple, compared to
the 1978 rates of $267.35
and $534.70.
The Spouse's
Allowance is paid to
persons between 60 and 65
years of age who are
married to Old Age
Security pensioners and
meet residence
requirements.
Entitlement to a Spouse's
Allowance and amount
paid are based on yearly
income.
The maximum
Spouse's Allowance will
increase to $281.36 from
$267.35. It is made up of
an amount equivalent to
the basic Old Age
Security pension and the
maximum Guaranteed
Income Supplement at
the married rate.
Payment of a Spouse's
Allowance for six months
following the death of the
pensioner spouse was
recently approved by
Parliament.
Some Old Age Security
pensioners and pensioner
couples whose other
income was too high to
qualify for the
Guaranteed Income
Supplement or Spouse's
Allowance in the past
may now be able to do so
because of the increase in
the income levels under
which these benefits may
be paid. These pensioners
will receive with their
January pension cheques
a form to use to request
an application if they feel
they can qualify for the
supplement or a Spouse's
Allowance.
