The Goderich Signal-Star, 1978-12-21, Page 32PAGE 8B —GODERIc U SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1978 God's peau came as a tiny baby. BY THE REVEREND G.L. ROYAL, KNOX PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH It was an old theologian, Schleir. macher, who maintained that in regard to God, man possesses 'a feeling of dependence.' He stated that this feeling was inescapable. We hale in our very creation a need to believe. We may be tempted to turn from God and proclaim, "There is no God," but Tillich would advise that even this doubt, this proclamation, is an affirmation of His Presence. The very consideration of God means something. The very fact that Ike dare to exercise our thoughts on the subject makes God real and alive. If J.B. Phillips could say, "Your God is too small," then Rudolf Otto could also exclaim, "God is absolutely unap- proachable, absolutely majestic and absolutely .energy." In the dim past the Psalmist could sing, "What art Thou mindful. of me?" God is certainly inescapable. The subject defies our denial. We are haunted by Francis Thompson's "Hound of Heaven." We attempt as human beings to explain: and, when talking about God, we use words like "awe," and "fascination," and "holiness." What we are admitting is that God remains for us totally incomprehensible. He is an enigma. His Presence is felt and known, and but he must continue inexplicable. Rudolf Otto calls the confrontation of man with God ,'the ,rational in relation to the non - rational.' He does not speak of God as irrational, but as defying what is rational. Man in his createdness has not the scope to understand the magnitude of God. Teergeston would say, "If man were to un- derstand God, there would be no God." Salvation lies within the line of Creation. It is a re-creation. Christ is the "New Man." The true 'image' is found in the Person of Jesus. We are people who think in terms of 'beginnings and endings' and we are tempted to think of Christ's coming as 'an end to 'alienation and sin.' We are tempted to Stop at that point. Must we not think also in terms of continuation? Is there not restoration in salvation? Is there not a harkening back to what once was? Man's disobedient action in Adam and Eve broke the image. I have always liked Martin Luther's illustration when he spoke of a mirror being fragmented on the pavement: looking down into the broken mirror one sees a broken image of himself, an ear, an eye, a tooth. The completed and perfect image is gone. If we recall our Old Testament, we will remember that by patriarch, prophet, judges and kings, the call to return was held toward Israel. In Christ, the final revelation of God's restoring desire, the Old Testament comes to an end. The New Testament speaks of 'peace on earth, goodwill towards all men.'.' God has always possessed this "peace" and this "goodwill" but man was unreceptive. The drama of Christ is so magnificent that our Once in Royal David's City Once in royal David's City Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for his bed. Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall. With the poor, and mean, and lowly .Lived on earth our Saviour holy. And through all His wondrous childhood He would honour and obey, Love and watch the lowly maiden In whose gentle arms He lay. Christian children all must be Mild, obedient, good as He. He is restoring the malaise to healthiness; He is bringing the fragments into a oneness. In believing, we are brought into the state of salvation. We are seeing the entire process from Creation and realizing it as God's own way. We are restored, restored to the image and likeness, restored in the fulness of God's kingdom. We see Salvation as a con- tinuation of Creation. God at no time was in- different; it was man who proved wanting. It is a simple truth that Dr. Ragner Teigen propounds, "there can ' never be a divorce bet- ween the head and the heart. „ 7 JoAnne Moore Grade 5 Robertson P.S. 1'1 I a\' \'our hearts be filled with the pcacc andijo\' of that holy g night, -so long ago.... when once, for a shining hour (-.#;.fir heaven touch earth and hope was born anew! The head and the heart are united in marriage, and both must be used in seeking our redemption. If we use only the head, we can become cold and austere; if we use only the heart, then things can happen like the recent horror in Guyana. It is wrong to imprison either head o'% heart. Both must be free to ex- perience the recreating power of God. l°, ,° ••• No 114 N rr2m4o q.,.+ Nw 1 .'r ,a r9. e° .:; - Agpp s.,..P '":;;1 I nPp g W°4 mT ° p@r:eV* m. -a o me, 0. ;II.' , : A. *,4:1 d° /y ° . o r: f ° p*! . e i / p ®4 , w$ y .y,w° °° Ia;,,/ /4sy,,pfl►gpow 4R o y wiv}.gi@°ap^^ d p p. °.m. tr T,Rr. • W? .CI. i °t1 1°itVfT AoCt. • e oRR ."
