Town takes ste
BY JEFF SEDDON
Goderich town council
took another small step
toward establishing a
5,000 foot paved runway
at .Sky Harbor Ale
Monday night wh. it
instructed its solicitor to
negotiate on three lots at
the north-west end of the
proposed airstrip:
After a closed session
council voted to instruct
solicitor Dan Murphy to
negotiate with Doug
Hunter of Goderich and
Joe Tzeiber of Chatham
to purchase three
lakefront lots that border
airport lands. The three
lotslie between the lake
bank and the end of what
is now a grass runway.
The town would like to
extend the grass strip and
paveit to give Sky
Harbor a runway long
enough to accommodate -
jet traffic;
The purchase of the lots
would give the town
ample room to construct
the runway provided
funds are available to
pick up the tab. The
major runway now open
at Sky Harbor and the
only paved strip at the
airport is 4,800 feet long
but because of its position
between Highway 21 on
the east and cottages on
the west only 3,800 feet of
it is usable for air traffic.
If the three lots in
question are purchased
and construction goes
ahead the new runway
would provide 5,000 feet
of usable pavement for
planes landing and taking
off.
The 'problem the town
faces • with the runway
that is now paved is that
it is barely long enough to
accommodate.. landing of
small jet aircraft.
Business Air Services,
one of the major users of
Sky Harbor, operates
such aircraft and would
like a better facility for
landing and taking off.
The town has been told by
the federal department of
transport that the paved
runway is inadequate for
safety reasons and can
only be used in ideal
conditions.
Council instructed
cQDERICki $IQNAL-STAR, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 24 lialimr.P.AGE 7
to new ruriwa
Murphy to time any
negotiations with the
March budget council
who will be preparing for
1979. Any deals made
with Tzeiber who owns
one lot will not be
finalized until March of
next year and the Hunter
land will be acquired In
1980 if possible.
Council had a recorded
vote on the issue. Mayor
Harry Worsell and
councillors Jim Searls
and Elsa Haydon voted
against acquiring the
land with Reeve, Eileen
Palmer, Deputysreeve
Bob Allen and councillors
Stan Profit, am es
