Four new graders
smashed through the
ribbon to officially open
the Champion Road
Machinery Sales and
Service building in the
Industrial Park, Friday.
The opening of the 9,000
square foot sales and
service building marked
the end of a 20 year era in
which the company
operated from the Vic-
toria and Newgate Street
location.
The company was
formed in 1948 and for the
first ten years it operated
from the factory location
before moving to Victoria
Street. Ironically the first
Champco Sales employee
was Bruce Sully, now
president of the Cham-
pion Road Machinery
Ltd.
General Manager,
Maurice Jenkins, ex-
plained that although the
Victoria Street building
was a practical location,
the facilities were less
than adequate and the
operation required more
space.
The Industrial Park
building has five service
bays, as did the Victoria
Street building, but
Jenkins claimed they
were just . unable to
operate as efficiently
within the space.
Champco Sales is
responsible for a major
portion of the Ontario
market and three branch
offices are located in
Toronto, North Bay and
Carleton Place.
The total operation
employs 82' people and
there are approximately
25 employees in the
Goderich plant. Champco
not ony sells graders, but
services them in their
market area and also
fixes trade-ins for resale.
Jenkins estimated that
'1175 Champco graders
have been sold in their
market area and in the
last 10 years the company
has averaged sales of 70
graders per year. The
oldest Champion grader
in the Ontario market is
vintage 1947-48.
"We sell more graders
in Ontario today than the
factory produced in a
whole year about 15 years
ago," Jenkins com-
mented. "And 80 percent
of the graders purchased
in Ontario are Champco
graders."
It's an enviable record
that Champco must
maintain and Jenkins
pointed out that the
availability of spare
parts is the prime
requisite for their out-
standing business record.
Sales and service pur-
chases its parts from
Champco and since each
branch maintains critical
parts, service is fast and
simple in most cases. The
company now sells more
used graders than anyone
else in Canada $ince, opt-„ ,
pure ses.:.fnv e t c.
Ins. I,
Champco Sales and
Service is a company in
itself, servicing a major
portion of the Ontario
Market, a point that
Jenkins likes to make
clear.
"Sure we are a part of
Champion Road
Machinery, but we
operate independently
and autonomously."

That's why you must be in good condition to drive
under these conditions.
Winter driving. For drivers this is
the most dangerous season. Con-
ditions change without warning.
The dry road you're on now can
quickly become treacherous at the
next bend in the road...
ice patches, frost, sudden snow
squalls, even wet leaves create
unexpected hazards. But during
the Holiday Season, these hazards
tend to inciriease.
Poor visibility combined with
heavy traffic throughout the
Holiday Season means you must
be in good condition to drive
under these conditions. So must
your car. So keep it in good repair.
And keep yourself alert at all
times. If you drink, don't drive.
And always watch out for the
other drivers. Assume there's
trouble ahead even when condi-
tions look safe. Help make,sure
you and your family will be here to
enjoy another great Ontario
Holiday Season.
