This covers the early story of Guelph and Guelph Township, The Huron Tract and scat- tered Crown Land lots across Southern Ontario from Windsor to Ottawa. The book tells mainly the founding of the Company in 1824, establishment of early settlements, building The HurOn Road and the gradual introduction of self government which• reduced the authority of Canada Company of- ficials posted either in Goderich or Toronto. The troubles of com- missioners and likewise those of the settlers which were complicated by poor communications are set out. In spite of complaints by certain settlers, The Canada Company was one of the most successful settlement companies to operate, in Canada and was largely responsible for the dramatic increase in immigration following the Rebellion of 1837. The story of the Canada Company was written by Thelma • Coleman, a freelance author, who lives in Stratford. The text was written in 1973-74 for the Perth County Historical Board and during 1978, the 125th anniversary of Perth County, it was' dncided'to publish it. Also, 1978 is the ,,150th anniversary of the survey of the Huron Road across the Huron Tract. Seven supplementary chapters have been added by' James Anderson, County Archivist, which explain more fully the lives of John Galt, Dr. William (Tiger) Dunlop and Anthony Van Egmond, ,,how the land was sur- veyed and the early history of Guelph, Goderich and Stratford. Also included are 90 pages of lists of early settlers from 1827 to 1839 of interest especially to genealogists. The book will be over 300 pages in length and will contain over 300 illustrations of people, documents and maps. There has never been anything so extensive on this subject before. Understandably, its production has taken longer than expected but work is nearly complete.
