FMY HELP COMES
ROM THE LORD,
THE MAKER OF
HEAVEN
AND EARTH."
(PSALM 121: 2 NIV)
Time and again,
everyday situations in
life make us aware of our
limitations and
weaknesses.
A small boy climbs too
high into a tree and can't
get down, so he cries,
"Help!"
Sister, trying a sewing
project for the first time
on her mother's sewing
machine, gets the thread
hopelessly entangled and
calls out in frustration,.
"Mother, help me!"
Mother, tense with the
thousand things calling
for her attention, with the
demands of growing
children, screams at her
husband, "Can't you help
me?"
Father, under the
pressure of work, time,
and human limitation,
struggling with the
problems of sky-
rocketing inflation,
breathes a desperate,
"Help!" .
Everyone needs help.
The trouble is, we're
inistee
stun
often too proud or too
ashamed to admit that we
need it. The greatest
human weakness is to
refuse to face up to our
need for help.
The next human
weakness is that we try
anything and anyone else
except the One from
whom our help comes.
Somehow it's easier to
take a pill than to lay
ourselves open to God's
prescription for our
sickness.
But we're forgetting
that God is big and has a
heart for people who need
help and know they need
it. Our "help comes from
the Lord, the Maker of
heaven and earth."
Human help is always
limited. It cannot take
away the deep and
persistent fears of our
heart. Only the Maker of
heaven and earth can do
that. Only He is big
enough to deserve that we
put our hope and trust in
Him.
Our Lord is not only a
big God but also a God
with a big heart. As we
prepare to celebrate
Christmas, we are
confronted with the big -
heartedness of God, when
we see Him willingly
sending His holy Son into
our world of imperfection
to redeem us from our sin
and weakness.
The coming of Christ,
His life, death, and
resurrection are our
biggest help because they
assure us that by faith in
Him, we are members of
God's family. When we
are sure that we are
members of God's
family, we can know that
no need or concern, no
worry or weakness, is too
great or too little for our
Heavenly Father's help.
May we learn to stop
looking first to inferior,
limited helpers in time of
need, and always turn
first .,to Him who made
heaven and earth.
