reactions, we can shrug
off any responsibility or
involvement. I trust you
will realize, however,
that as committed
Christmas, these reac-
tions are inconsistent
with the command to be
obedient, the command to
love that is ours.
Let us read for a
moment two selections
from the gospels:
"The Spirit of the Lord
is upon me, because he
has anointed me to
preach good news to the
poor. He has, sent me to
proclaim release to the
captives and recovering
of sight to the blind, to set
at liberty those who are
oppressed, to proclaim
the acceptable year of the
Lord." (Luke 4: 18-21)
"For I was hungry
and you gave me food, I
was thirsty and you gave
me drink, I was a
stranger and you
welcomed me, I was
naked and you clothed
me, I was sick and you
visited me, I was in
prison and you came to
me." (Matthew 25:31)
(Note Jesus' iden-
tification with those who
are suffering.)
In the first passage
Jesus lays out the thrust
of his ministry. In the
second he identifies
himself with those to
whom his ministry is
directed --He doesn't say
when someone else is in
prison, or sick, or hungry-
-minister to him -her. He
says, "I was in prison..."
Our mandate for in-
volvement in human
rights issues lies in the
call of a God who is
constantly liberating
those in bondage and in a
Christ who sets us all free
to be whole persons. It is
in recognition of so many
violations of the rights of
individuals to become
fully human that the
United Church has
specified this year's
mission theme as
"Human Rights".
I wanted to' point out
these considerations for
us as Christians before I
proceeded to fell you
about Amnesty Inter-
national. My involvement
in Amnesty International
comes about largely as a
result of my Christian
faith.
So let us look now at the
situation in our world
where over 100 countries
throughout the world
have imprisoned people
for their beliefs, tortured
them, denied them fair
trials, or otherwise
denied their rights. It's a
grim picture„ but it would
be even grimmer if these
flagrant violations of
human rights were not
being met by voices of
protest.
So let us ' ask two
questions: What is being
done and what can I do?
What is being done?
Amnesty International is
at work --the largest in-
ternational NGO solely
concerned with human .
rights.
Founded in 1961 by
lawyer Peter Benenson
out of his concern over
the growing number of
people detained for
political or religious
reasons, it has grown to
an organization with
thousands of members in
109 countries, 35 of which
have national sections of
A.I. There are 2,000
adoption groups working
on specific cases of
prisoners of conscienqe--
A.I. handles abbte 7;000
such cases each year.
There is one
prerequisite for mem-
bership in A.I.--a burning
conviction that there are
right that all of us should
enjcfy as human beings.
Amnesty International
is an independent and
impartial organization
working universally --it is
not_ associated with any
government, political
party or religious creed.
A.I. has consultative
status with the United
Nations, UNESCO, and
the Council of Europe,
cooperative relations
with the Inter -American
Commission on Human
Rights of the
Organization of
American States, and
observer status with the
Organization of African
Unity.
