overseas to help the sick
and needy. She also got
some nurse's training in
England but due to cir-
cumstances beyond her
control, she was unable to
complete her courses.
This did not stop her from
serving as a nurses' aid
at hospitals in later
years, including seven
years assistance
Alexandra Marine and
General Hospital in
Goderich.
One Christmas in Lily's
childhood stands out very
well in her memory. The
factory where her father
worked was on strike and
he was unable to get
another job. Her mother
gathered her and her
brothers and sisters
around her knee and told
them that there would be
no gifts for Christmas
that year. The children
knew how saddened their
mother was to have to tell
them so and they all
plotted together to figure
out ways to make that
Christmas a happy one
despite their poverty.
They constructed many
gifts out of used objects
they could find outside
and around the home,
which they fashioned out
of branches and tinsel
paper. It wasn't such a
sad Christmas afterall. In
fact, it was a very special
one.
Lily remembers her
mother gathering her arid
her brothers and sisters
around her knee often to
say their prayers. They
were taught that right
was right and wrong was
wrong, she says. Today's
children, she feels, need
much more guidance and
help than they are
receiving. It is so easy to
grow up. today to become
self-centered never
thinking of others, she
says.
MOVES FROM
ENGLAND
When Lily was 25 -
years -old, a brother sent
for 'her and her parents
from Canada and so they
moved here to live in
1920. They first lived in
Port Colborne where Lily
became the leader of a
youth group. She also
joined' the Women's
Missionary Society of the
Welland Free Methodist
Church. The Society still
considers Lily a valuable
and active member
although she now lives in
Goderich and have
honored her for her
"`-ceaseless efforts in
promoting missions."
After moving from Port
Colborne, Lily lived in
London, Hamilton and
then Goderich where she
has been for the last 28
years. Although she had
always been used to a
city, Lily says she soon
ot the spirit...
came to love living
in Goderich and has
made many friends here.
She is the Missionary
Secretary for the
Goderich Salvation
Army's Home League
through which she sends
parcels and financing to
missionaries all over the
world. On the nights when
she can't sleep, she gets
up and makes bandages
from bed sheets to be
included in the parcels
for the missionaries.
Lily is an avid reader
devouring _ books con-
stantly and she has r 50
prayer partners. She has
scrapbooks full of letters
of thanks she has
received from various
people as well as many
photos and mementos
sent to her from
missionaries. She has
pictures of people from
poor countries wearing
the hospital gowns and
bandages she has made
for them and these pic-
tures gladden her heart.
Perhaps one of her
prize possessions (for a
woman who has so few
possessions) is her doll
collection. She has dolls
from all over the world,
mostly sent to her by the
missionaries she has
helped.

Lily considered being a
missionary herself at one
time but she had to help
out at home and cir-
cumstances did not allow
her the opportunity. She
made the pest of her life
though and did the next
best thing to actually
becoming a missionary.
She supported all those
missionaries who she
could with prayers,
letters and gifts.
She's a real character.
She's always doing
helpful things, actyb

"I've had a full' life and
I can't complain," says
A person never has so little that he or she .can't share with someone else,
says Lily Blanchaird of Goderich. Even if people just know you're praying
for them, it helps, she feels. True to these beliefs, Lily has supported
missionaries for over 50 years by sending letters and packages overseas like
the ones shown here. The packages contain many things which most of us
would take for granted but which the missionaries highly value. (Photo by '

Lily. "It's not always
easy to live the real
Christian life but I feel a
calling and I've given my
heart to the Lord."
If anyone has come
close to living the "real
Christian life", it has
been Lily Blanchard.
Anyone who has met her
is sure to agree.
• So there it is. It's not a
glamorous story about a
person who has achieved
fame and recognition for
a special hobby, skill or
profession. It's• just a
simple story about a little
lady leading a good life
and helping others the
best way she knows how.
She's the golden rule
personified and really
feels that it is better to
give than to receive. How
nice if everyone could
follow Lily's shining
example.
