Cinderella (with a twist) was new toall
BY
JOANNE BUCHANAN
The classic fairy tale of
Cinderella took on a new
twist when Goderich
Little Theatre presented
it to audiences at
MacKay Hall last week.
While the basic story line
remained the same, the
style in which it was
performed was quite
different and probably
new to most of the
members in the
audiences.
The Cinderella per-
formed by GLT was a
Pantomime written
especially for GLT by
Brian Markson. Pan-
tomime, not to be con-
fused with the silent art off
mime, can be described
One (or should I say two?) of the highlights of Goderich Little Theatre's
presentation of Cinderella last week was the ugly step -sisters, Griselda and
Ermintrude Gruesome played by, Mitch Moore (left) and Michael Scott.
Note the "figures" and the "elegant" clothes. No offence guys but you both

IODE
as a traditional English
Christmas theatrical
show based on a fairy tale
and featuring singing and
dancing.
A pantomime always
requires audience par-
ticipation and this
seemed to go over well
with the Goderich
audiences, especially the
children who responded
loudly to the characters'
different pleas.
One (or should I say
two) of the highlights of
the show were the ugly
step -sisters, Griselda and.
Ermintrude Gruesome.
The fact that they were
played by men (Mitch
Moore and Michael Scott)
really contributed to the
success of their roles.
Their costumes and the
....um "figures" in them
were funny enough but
clumsy efforts at fancy
dance steps and attempts
at singing added to the
hilarity. Sorry- guys, but
you really did earn the
adjective UGLY!
The main character,
Cinderella, was played by
Jo -Anne Durst who really
displayed a fine singing
voice with numbers like I
Just Want to be His Wife
and I Have Been Blessed.
Clarence Knight played
the role of Buttons, a
traditional character in
the English pantomimes.
Unlike Buttons in other
pantomimes, this time he
ends up with the girl
(Cinderella) in the end
when he turns out to be
the long lost son or little
shrimp of King Crab of
Crustacea (pardon the
puns).
King Crab's role was
played by Arie Van der
Ende. He was a crusty old
man•and so. mean (how
mean was he?) that he
was going to --heaven
forbid-- have the sweet
Cinderella thrown in the
dungeon. He was ap-
propriately booed and
hissed at by the audience.
Madame Beadle was
played by Kathy Jenkins,
always a favourite with
GLT audiences.
Peri the good fairy was
played by Carrie Middel.
The clothes she provides
Cinderella with so she
can attend the ball, have
built-in obsolescence and
disappear at midnight.
Now there is a new
thought: How did Cin-
derella ever get home
from that ball without her
clothes?
A chorus of milk maids,
fishmongers, butcher
boys, bakers and cour-
tiers were played by
Shirley Hall, Barbara
Conlon, Andrea De
Winter, Karen Drennan,
Allan Van Der Ende,
Scott Collins, Dan Durst
and Mike Madden. The
chorus had an important
part in the production as
a back up to the main
characters.
Allan Van der Ende
also doubled as the an-
nouncer at the Royal ball.
He introduced people like
General and Mrs. Motors,
The Mayor of the Dodge
City and Mrs. A.M.C.
Ford. As you can tell the
names, there was quite a

skillfully using names of

who showed excellent
