Facscan - new
nightmare?
eanada, long con-
sidered a leader in the
field of telecom-
munications, will score
again early next year
when it ushers in the
world's first completely
automated electronic
mail system ...Facscan.
This was virtually
assured redently when
representatives of Bell
Canada signed an
agreement guaranteeing
the use of Bell's facilities
within Bell's operating
territory for as long as
Facscan operates.
The new system is the
Aresult of co-operation
between Bell Canada and
a small company based in -
Toronto - Ivor Kaye and
Associates Inc. - which
designed and developed
the system.
"Facscan is truly an
electronic mail system,"
says Ivor G. Kaye,
president. "The cost of 98
cents per standard page
(81jz inches x 11 inches)
will apply from point to
point anywhere in
Canada where Facscan
operates, regardless of
distance.
"Furthermore, unlike
other systems now under
development elsewhere,
Facscan will be fully
automated. The sender
needs a simple terminal
and the recipient needs
one, and that's all. No..
long-distance dialing is
involved and a two-hour
service is guaranteed. We
will offer an express
service of fifteen minutes
for $1.35 per page and, for
those to whom overnight
delivery is adequate, we
will have a discounted
charge of 70 cents per
page."
Kaye says the ter
minals are easy to use -
"just like putting a letter
in a mailbox" - with no
fiddling to wrap the page
around a drum, for
example. At the receiving
end, the copy of the
transmitted document
simply pops out of the
terminal, cut `to the ap-
propriate size.
Early in February,
1979', Facscan will start
operating between
Toronto and Montreal
and, shortly after that,
the service- will be ex-
tended to embrace
Vancouver, Calgary and
Ottawa.
Scores of companies
already have committed
to the service, Kaye says,
"and most of them are
eager to get started.
There is a vacuum among
the different methods of
moving information - a
vacuum which calls for
speed, accuracy,
reliability, multi -address
capability, fu1-1
automation and an at-
tractive price.
Kaye notes that
transient users' (in-
dividuals) will not need
terminals or even access
to terminals. Someone
wishing to send a ore -
page letter from Toronto
to Vancouver, for
example, might drop off
the page at some con-
venient place where
Facscan will have
designated agents.
Shopping plazas, office
concourses, downtown
and suburban malls are
ideal such locations."'
From there, 'the
document would go to a
local Facscan Tran-
smission Centre for
electronic movement to
the Vancouver Facscan
Centre which, in turn,
would have the letter
moved to a convenient
pick-up point - perhaps
another shopping plaza.
competition beating Clinton and Wingham. Team
members are left to right, John Wagler, Joe Moore,
Paul .Young and Dave Cartwright. (News -Record
