The Goderich Signal-Star, 1978-12-14, Page 8PAGE 8—GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1,978 Tid Bits...Tid Bits...Tid Bits... from page 2 active this year. In th fall, a successful Men's Night earned profits o more than $3,000 for the Kinsmen Centre. The club operated project Toy Drop in conjunction with Family and Children's Service again this year so that needy children wil receive toys for Christ mas. The Club was also responsible for the Santa Claus float which was the highlight of the 'town's Santa Claus parade a few weeks ago. The Club is planning their annual Christmas card party and luncheon for senior citizens at the Kinsmen Centre on December 14. The main project for the Zone 1 Kinsmen Clubs (from Niagara north to Collingwood and south to Windsor) is Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Last year, in excess of $120,000 was raised by the Kinsmen for this cause. The Goderich Kinsmen Club has some CF "bubbles" in some establishments in town for donations. Club members are also planning a cross country ski-a-thon for the third week in January (weather permitting) to raise money for CF research. "If each family buys enough Canadian goods this holiday season to create just one more day's work per family, the total result will be more than 32,000 full-time jobs for Canada." Through the co- operation of the Retail Council of Canada and the federal Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce, the Ontario ministry has mounted a nationwide program to distribute "Shop Canadian" point -of -sales material to retail stores. The Christmas .retail push is part of a three- year "Shop Canadian" strategy developed by the Ontario government to promote the' sale of Canadian -made goods. +++ Potential for the tourist trade in southwestern Ontario lies in the short term holidayer. There is a vast number of people who are visiting different places for a few days, several times throughout the year, says the South- western Ontario Travel Association (SWOTA). They are interested in community events, at- tractions, and facilities. For' any individual community these visitors are spending money which otherwise wouldn't have been earned. Whether they are from a border state, the Toronto metro area or just a few miles down the road, it is still new found dollars. ' It is for this market that the official Travel Guide of Southwestern Ontario ,is published. It features communities throughout the area with their attractions, dates of events and facilities available. Detailed maps of each county are in- cluded to encourage travel throughout the rural areas. The 1979 edition of the Southwestern Ontario Travel Guide will be published in March 1979. + + + When ' a neighbour found nine-year-old Mary Ellen chained to a bed in 1893, she discovered that not one New York state law prevented cruelty to children. The public outcry in both Canada and the U.S. led to the world's first child protection Iw. More than 80 years later, according to the Canadian Horne and School. and Parent- Teacher Federation, the abused or neglected child is still too frequently the victim of an apathetic con.muni0 or neighbours who hope the problem will go away.. The national group representing Canadian e parents announced at a Toronto press conference f on November 14 that all of its provincial and local associations have received a pamphlet entitled The Child... Everybody's s Responsibility. It is in- tended t focus on a 1 problem that was not - even seriously resear- ched in Canada until the 1960s. The pamphlet, the result of more than one year of research by a Federation committee based in Prince Edward Island, is an attempt to increase understanding among parents and to emphasize the im- portance of early detection. The emphasis is on prevention rather .than punishment for those involved. Copies off the pamphlet are available from the CHSPTF head office at 240 Eglinton Avenue East, Toronto M4P 1K8. + + + There will be full mail delivery service from the Goderich Post Office on Saturday, December 16. ,,, Regular wicket service from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will be maintained each Saturday until December 23. "Good discussion makes for good govern- ment," he told council. Judge Frances Carter, who gave Tinney the oath of office, told council that last year when Ginn was elected warden he said council had someone- who would "put some spirit in council'.' This -year he referred to T'inney's membership on his township's fire board and told council it had someone who would "set the county on fire". Carter said Huron County had a lot to offer. He said in today's society "bigness is good- ness" adding that nothing could be farther from the truth. He said Huron's agricultural resources were far greater than many other counties in Ontario. He said the county's rural base kept the work ethic alive here. He said farmers in Huron still believe in "an honest day's work". He added that they "don't always get an honest day's pay for their work but by golly they give an honest day's work". "Don't sit in the sunshine crying about yesterday's rain and don't sit in the rain crying about tomorrow's sunshine," said Carter. "Show the people of this province that this county is the banner county of the province." at the Sub Post Office located at Fincher's.
