Gray of Goderich has retired three months • early to accept a position as , Administrator and Treasurer of North Street United Church beginning this week. Court reporting or transcribing court cases as they occur, is an ar- duous task requiring constant concentration. Mrs. Gray reported at 200 words a minute in Eeopieri particular The Candle Lite (not to be confused with the Can- dlelight Restaurant) recently opened at the corner of Newgate and Hamilton Streets (where the for- mer Radio Shack was located). You guessed it --it is a candle shop but also features some jewellery and tapestries. Proprietors, Dorothy Farrish and daughter Darlene, operate another shop byA the same name in KIncardine. The Candle Lite joins the Fin 'n Beak and The Printing Press as a new small business within the same area. The Fin 'n Beak pet shop was opened not long ago and then the Candle Lite, a candle store opened just recently. But most recent of all is The Printing Press, Good Life Book Shop at 75 Hamilton Street. Justice of the Peace work since 1972. During her years as d court reporter, the longest case ,Mrs. Gray ever transcribed was 720 pages. She recorded ten murder preliminary inquiries in her time and worked ' under six magistrates and judges, the most recent one being Judge Cochrane. Mrs. Gray has been a widow for nearly 40 years. She has no family except for two sisters who also live in Goderich. She. is a member of Victoria yea Street Uanil,ed our*, She is .also a violinjgt with the. Mitchell„ knifed Church 12 piece orchestra and her- hobbies inelade swimming, diving, cycling, -gardening, knitting and sewing. In addition to her work at North Street church, Mrs. Gray remains a JP. A retirement party was held for her at the Court House in Goderich on Friday •afternoon. Present were Judge Cochrane, Judge Carter, the Sheriff, the ,Crown Attorney, the Clerk - Beecher Menzies, President of the Huron Law Association, offers Mabel Gray of Goderich his best wishes upon her retirement as a court reporter after 39 years of efficiency and dedication. Mrs. Gray has accepted a position as Administrator and Treasurer of North Street United Church and keeps herself busy with numerous hobbies. Beecher Menzies, president of the Huron Law Association, presented Mrs. Gray with a gift on behalf of the Association. Mrs. Gray was also feted at retirement parties after court in Winghgm on November 24 and after court in Exeter on November 28. On her last d y,in court in Goderich, Judge Cochrane and J. M. Donnelly, lawyer, ex- pressed their best wishes ' to Mrs. Gray and stated their appreciation for her dedication and efficiency over the years.
