Farm
folk
need
fair
prices
BY JOANNE
BUCHANAN
The potential for the
agricultural industry in
this country is
"tremendous", William
Stewart, former Minister
of Agriculture for
Ontario, told a group of
area farmers gathered at
the Maitland Country
Club for a meeting
sponsored by the Bank of
Nova Scotia last Wed-
nesday afternoon.
"We've only scratched
the surface," he told his
audience citing examples
of how irrigation and tile
drainage could be used to
help increase land
productivity.
"But farm prices have
.to be high enough to
warrant investment .in
these things," he con-
tinued.
He said that farmers
are no longer content
with "living poor and
dying rich" as they once
were. They want fair
prices for their products
these days and they
should get them, he said.
• "Sure food prices have
gone up but so has the
. average take-home pay.
An average hour's wages
will buy more food in
Canada today than ever
begoce," he added.
He stated his belief that
consumers were upset
because now that they
have to pay the farmer a
decent price for his
goods, they,have to give
up some of the other
luxuries they have
become used to like a
second automobile or
color television set.
Stewart said that there
is no ,shortage of food or
land available for
agriculture in this
country. While some land
has been taken out of
productivity for housing
and industrial
development, not much
damage has been don,e
when one looks at. the
total picture, he' don -
eluded.
"The future of farming
rests on the economic
viability of the country.
Industry generates jobs
and jobs generate money
for food," he reasoned.
Stewart said he heard
more about land use
preservation in 1974 than
he had heard in all his
previous years in office.
But the screams of ur-
banites saying that we
are running out of land
and food are false, he
eontinued. He gave
several examples to back
up this statement.
It was only in the late
sixties and early
seventies that the
government was actually
paying farmers not to
grow crops through, such
programs as LIFT
(Lower Incentives for
Tomorrow). And it was

Ontario Minister of Agriculture, William Stewart (right) for speaking to
area farmers at a seminar sponsored by the bank and held at the Maitland
Country Club last Wednesday. Stewart told his audience that farmers must
get -decent prices‘for their goods to warrant investment in such things as
irrigation and tile drainage to improve agricultural potentital. (Photo by

not long ago that farmers
were selling their corn for
85 cents a bushel antteggs
at one dollar for four
dozen because the supply
exceeded ' the demand,
Stewart said. Many
fedi:lets ".61114;gtheir land
and 'tOOk on ,other jobs
just in order to make a•
living, he said.
Then came the
disastrous crops of
Russia in 1972 and this
created a demand for
wheat again. (Cash crop
prices often depend on the
yields of other countries.)
It was then that urbanites
began screaming about
running out of land and
food, he said.
Stewart told the
audience thatCanadian
farmers produced 167
million bushels of'corn in
1977 as compared to 40
miaion bushels 15years
agO - and 30 million
bushels of wheat in 1977
as compared to 14 million
North America has the
potential to have the
greatest agricultUral food
production in the world,
he said. Narrowing down_
to Huron County, he said
some of the finest land,
best farmers and
greatest productivity was
to be found here. He told
the farmers present that
one of their most useful
tools could be a sharp
pencil for planning things
out on paper.

"The ability to manage
one's ownaffairs, is the
key," he said while
urging the farthers" to
become more business-
like, demanding a fair
return for investments.
He said farmers should
make the best use of their
resources and common
sense. He suggested
setting yearly objectives.
He said many farmers
are in the business for the
satisfying. and rewarding
lifestyle it provides.
"They certainly aren't
in it for the money, (with
the prices they get)," he
said.
