asters Breeclers 'award
George Haydon must
be a proud man. He is one
of the few who have ever
received a Master
Breeders award two
years in a row.
At the annual meeting
oi` the Huron County
Holstein Club Mr.
Halon, from R.R. 2,
Gorrie, received his
award from national
director Jim Needham.
Mr. Haydon also
received certificates for
highest and superior
production for a cow
producing more than
1,000 pounds of butter fat
in a year.
Also` receiving awards
recently at the meeting in
Belgrave were for high
production David Mar-
shal, Enlwood Seili, Joe
Winkle and Elson
Speiran.

tion, .Bob Vodden and
Clifford McNeil received
certificates. Mr. McNeil
received certificates for
three -cows. Premier
breeder was Holden
Farms,owned by Bob
Vodden. Premier

a certificate and in the

Over 140 members
attended the meeting and
meal. Gordon Bell,
fieldman, reported a good
year • with 119 new
members with 28 coming
from Huron County.
"We feel there is a
shortage of testing and
classification programs
available." said Mr. Bell.
"We are hoping to rectify
this with help from the
provincial and federal
governments."
Mr. Bell encouraged
members to play a larger
part •in the showing
eattle, He felt that
breeders/ could do a lot
more culling of un-
desireables.
"I realize prices are
hard against this but it is
still necessary." said Mr.
Bell,
Jim Needham national
director reported' that it
has been a good year for
exports which are up 100
percent both for U.S.
and foreigh exports. .
There are now only
three directors from
Ontario instead of 4.
Councillors from each
area will discuss with the
director's show and up
coming plans. Coun-
cillors are determined by
the number of dairy men
in a county: Huron- has
two.
Cliff McNeil and Tom
Consitt from United
Breeders urged members
to make use of the young
bull semen available. If
no results are noted from
members then the young
bulls will be taken off the
list. Over $1 million
dollars in exported semen
was reported by Mr.
McNeil.

Ag. minister
changes stand
Ontario's minister of
agriculture changed his
mind on the contentious
issue of agrominiums. At
the questioning on the
subject at thebreakfast
meeting of the Ontario
Federation of
Agriculture, Mr.
Newman admitted that
he has agreed to give a
licence'for a pilot project.
Farmers in " Simcoe
County have strenuously
objected to an
agroniinium in, West
Gwillembury Township.
They claim that is just a
disguise for urban
development. The O.F.A.
has supported -them in
their position. -
An ; agrominium is a
sort of commune where a -
developer divides a
hundred acre farm in ten
acre lots, and puts ten
houses on it. The owners
supposedly ;,will continue
to farm the remaining
,ninety acres and from the
profit pay the mortgage.
The farmers see the
future as ten lots with
some horses or weeds and
many complaints about
the normal farming
operations of the regular
farmer.
Mr. Newman said at
the breakfast meeting
that the licence would not
be given in the originally
intended Simcoe
To*nship,
and many other related the-, end of the
subjects. period.

with garbage dumps,
hydro generating sites,

all sorts of other urban
intrusions.
Hannam said Ontario's
half-hearted .com-
t mitment to agriculture
';was, also,. evident in the
reconop jc;priorities.
He ,peanted out, "In
1978,. .•.one automobile
manufacturer— Ford --
received, government
subsidies for establishing
one plant in Windsor.
Those subsidies were
over 70 million dollars.
That amounts to nearly
half the entire
agricultural budget for
all of Ontario last year".
Hannam called on both
the Federal. and
Provincial Governments
to change their policies
and make a real com-
mitment to agriculture.
