CHURCH
Christmas -what it does mean to you
BY THE REVEREND .•
A.F. GARDNER,
RETIRED UNITED
CHURCH MINISTER
For many, Christmas
means little or nothing. It
is just a habit in which
friendship is renewed and
love wells up in the heart ;
gifts are given and
received; and friends and
families gather together.
But , for many people,
this is all. After Christ-
mas the daily round of
tasks will have returned
and Christmas will be
only a happy memory.
Why is it that many
never see anything
deeper than the re-
awakening of half-
forgotten friendships?
How many of us ask
ourselves what is the
meaning .of it all?
I feel there is nothing
this world needs more
today than to go back to
Bethlehem. It is' time to
listen again to the
Christmas messageand
the angels' song which is
too often drowned out by
the noise and confusion of
the world about.
What is this Christmas
message?
There are many notes
which might be sounded;
notes of joy and gladness
inister's
stun
Y
in which we hear again
the story retold of the
Birth off the Christ Child;
a story of peace and
goodwill among men.
Yet the importance of
this story to us is not
something of the past but
a fact of the present and
the future. God's love was
seen in that He sent His
Son into the world, not
only because He cared,
about the Jews and the
Gentiles; His, love is for
all mankind, rich and
poor, black and white,
good and bad, Capitalist
and Communist; for all
people living in every
age.
Christmas is a time to
mark this fact and in
worship we allow Christ
to enter fully into our
lives; healing, saving,
enabling us to give and to
live for others, even as He
lived and dies for us.
Thus we do not need to
shut our eyes to the harsh
reality of everyday life to
know Him present.
Indeed, those who have
been most aware of their
limitations, who have
suffered most, have often
been most aware of His
Presence.
For instance, Dietrich
Bonhoffer was such an
one. Some of his
most remarkable
writings were done in a
Nazi prison camp - yet he
never lost faith.
Christmas need not
mean looking back,
however, and shutting
our eyes to the hard facts

of life today. The truth of
Christmas is that God
chose to make His life
among men in our world,
and not as it might have
been.
He will be present with
us in our celebration of
the Nativity, when we
bring with us our joys and
our sorrows, . our
our
strengths and
weaknesses, making our
feeble offering of our-
selves, that we may serve
Him in His world.
He will be with us as we
go out to give and to serve
in His name to a world
that badly needs a
Saviour.
And what of the future?
What hope is there for
peace, joy and good will
among men?
True, man has learned
very little about
achieving peace over the
years. But our hope for
'the future does not lie in
the possibility that men
will grow wiser or better.
Our hope lies in the
certainty that God,
having shown His love by
