Be ready
for
winter
stops
Each winter brings new
stories of motorists
stranded by blizzards and
snowstorms, and Ontario
seems to have had more
than its fair share off such
conditions in recent
years. According to the
Ontario Safety League,
all motorists should carry
basic winter survival
equipment in the car.
Together with jumper
cables, salt or sand to
provide traction, your
basic survival kit should
include the following
ingredients: 1, a shovel or
hoe to improve your
chances of freeing your
car; 2, Two wool blankets
to provide warmth. Make
maximum use of body
heat by more than -one
person sharing a blanket;
3, Matches, . candles, or
containers of canned heat
and a coffee can to melt
snow for drinking water --
never use unmelted snow
as a substitute for
drinking water. The
candle and can could also
double as a foot warmer.
In fact, many authorities
suggest that the heat
from a single candle is
sufficient to prevent
freezing in snowbound
vehicle; . 4, a couple of
plastic bags can provide
excellent protection from
wind if it is necessary to
go outside the car. Just
cut out head and arm
holes and slip them over
the shoulders. However,
leaving your car should
be done only when ab-
solutely necessary.; 5, a
flashlight , will provide
light if you are forced to
stay in your car over-
night. It can also be used
to. signal your location to
rescuers.
4Medicalautliorities say
alcohol is not a good
survival item. It causes
dilation of blood vessels
close to the skin, speeding
up loss of body heat.
To extend your gas
and heat supply, run your
engine about ten minutes
in the hour. Keep a
downwind window open a
crack for ventilation
when the engine is run-
ning. Make sure the tail
pipe is clear of snow,
otherwise the interior of
the car may fill with
deadly exhaust fumes.
Don't overlook
newspapers as excellent
insulation.material. They
can be wrapped, around
the feet or placed on the
floor for extra insulation.
Drivers operating
throughout Northern
Ontario carry a lot more
survival equipment in
their cars and truck than
the few items mentioned
here. Their kits might
also include a small pot,
packaged soup, • knife,
fork and spoon, an axe,
tea bags, sugar, and
sleeping bags. Some even
carry a portable propane
stove.
There are, of course,
items that drivers should
always carry no matter
what the season: a chain
or a stoutxope for towing,
flares to mark off the
highway in case of an
emergency or accident.
Although it is a
frightening experience to
be stranded during a
blizzard, you must try to
remain calm. Panic is
your worst enemy. Calm,
reasoned action plus a
basic survival kit will
keep you alive for a
surprisingly long time.
