Last week the - Mer- chants hammered Kettle. Poiriit 10-2 in Thedford and recorded their 'second victory, of the week ,with a 7”3 home ice victory Monday. The victories boosted the Goderich record to 11 wins out of 13 league, Ron Whetstone (17) of the. Goderich Merchants watches for a rebound as the Hensall goaltender juggles a shot in intermediate C hockey action Monday. The Merchants defeated Hensall 7-3 and added a second victory, 10-2 over Kettle Point, last week to boost their season record to 11 wins in 13 league games. The Merchants will host Centralia in their next home game, Monday. (photo by Dave Sykes) Midget B's impressive in two wins Aver Walkerton, Mount Forest BY DAVE SYKES Thea Goderich Midget Bs racked up two im- pressi`re victories in WOAA league play last week, dumping Walkerton 5-2 in Goderich, Thursday and defeating , Mount Forest 10-1 in 'Mbunt Forest, Sunday. The Midget Bs took advantage of numerous power play opportunities in the game against Walkerton and built up a 9-0 lead in the third period before Walkerton was able to beat Goderich goal tender Scott Wilson. Walkerton added a second goal in the final period but Goderich wrapped the 5-2 win with an insurance goal late in the game. Larry Boyce, Mike Murphy, Stuart Crew, Jeff Denommy and Steve Sager each scored one goal for Goderich. Boyce and Denommy scored ;first period goals to boost Goderich into a 2-0 lead after one period of while and Murphy scored 'the lone second period goal. Crew scored on an unassisted effort in the third period to put Goderich ahead 4-0 but Walkerton replied with two quick goals to narrow the midget lead to two. Steve Sager scored the final Goderich goal. Nine players shared in the scoring Monday as Goderich spotted Mount Forest a one -goal lead and then unleashed a potent offence that produced 10 unanswered goals. Dave Simpson beat Goderich netminder Wilson for theafirst goal of the game at 14.02 of the 7 first' period but Goderich replied with five straight goals in the first .period and added five more in the third to wrap up the victory. Boyce led the Goderich scoring parade with two goals while team-mates Stuart Crew, Larry Kelly, Jim Fritzley, Randy Graham, Phil Brown, Mike Paquette, Willie' Denomme and Dean Bowra added singles. Crew added three assists for a four- point effort while Paquette and John Alexander added two assists apiece. games. Much of the Merchants success of the last two games can be attributed to the line of Petrie, Paquette and 'Kolkman. Hensall, opened the scoring in the game after a minute and a half of play but quick goals by Petrie and Paquette lifted the Merchants into 1 a one -goal lead. Hensall tied the ane with a powerplay effort' late In the first period and then again took a one -goal lead with scoring' just 30 seconds into the period. But the Merchants rebounded from the deficit and controlled the play for most of the last two periods. Lions rack up eighth win in nine. starts The Goderich Lions Pee Wees won two games in WOAA hockey action last weekend, getting by Port Elgin here Satur- day, 4-2, and blasting Durham, 12-2, in Durham Sunday. The victories give the Lions a record of eight wins and one loss in their first nine league games. The loss for Port Elgin was only their second of the season. Both have come at the hands of .the Lions. Goderich's only loss was to Port Elgin in the" first game of the schedule. The two teams traded goals in the first period here Saturday, with Grant Garrow opening the scoring for the'Lions, scoring on a deflection after taking a pass from Trevor Erb. Steve Laird put Port Elgin on even terms with a goal near the end of the period. Goderich scored two goals in thesecond period before Mike Chenette replied for Port Elgin, beating- Terry Bean with a shot from the right side. John Thompson got the first Goderich goal, assistedby defenceman David Day. The other Lions counter came on a power -play effort when Peter Stahl tipped in a shot at -the corner of the net. The Libis' gqt the inT surance roarer with just over five minutes left in the game when Faun Brenner beat Bob Armstrong in the Port Elgin net from close in. Port Elgin played a man short for two of the last three minutes of the game , when they were assessed a delay of game penalty. They had requested a measurement of Lion's forward Rob, Gibbon's stick, but referee Mark Rowes check showed the stick to be legal and the delay of game penalty was assessed as the rule requires. Scoring one each were John Thompson, Paul Brenner, Todd Graham Ska te-a- thon considered a big success On Nov. .25, 1978, the Goderich Figure Skating Club sponsored a public skate-a-thon at the Goderich and District Community Centre from 11:OO a.m.-5:OOp.m. Sixty-three skaters participated with only six having to quit due to various reasons. Most reasons were due to blisters and a small first- aid station was set up to take care of this problem. The arena staff were on hand at all times to help out with any problems that might have occurred and flooded the ice once every hour. However, the skaters were very en- thusiastic and were on the ice almost before the tractor was finished. Lunch was provided for all participants which they enjoyed. Mr.- Rick ' Pet tits, professional coach' with the club, helped to oversee the skaters while on the ice and assist along with our senior amatiur coaches from the club and also a couple of coaches from Minor Hockey. A variety of music was played which helped to keep everyone moving. Mayor Harry Worsell finished along with the majority and helped to draw the lucky numbers for the variety of prizes at each break time. The youngest skaters were three year old Danette . Horton, little sister of Debbie Horton, -12, who had the most pledges and Tyler Brady, three-year old son of Mrs. Fran. Brady, professional coach with the club. Each skater is urged to collect his pledges promptly and turn them into the Victoria and Grey Trust Co. as close to the due date, Dec. 9 78 as possible. Single assists, went to Trevor .Martin, Shawn' Rahbek, Trevor Erb and Mike Brenner. Billy MacFarlane and Terry Whiteside were the only Durham shooters to beat Terry Bean who went the distance in goal for the Lions. The Lions have two games again this weekend, ' with Hanover playing here Saturday at 5 p.m., and Goderich travelling to Walkerton Sunday for a 2:45 p.m. game.
