Stars whip East London 9-5

The Goderich Signal -
Star juveniles are serving
notice they will be a team
to be reckoned with in the
WOAA juvenile dividion..
Despite a shaky start
this season, the juveniles
have been winning by
increasingly large
margins of late and
added East London to
that list Sunday with a 9-5
home ice victory..
The win improved the
Stars season record to
three wins against three
losses and two ties.
The last time the two
teams met they tied 3-3,
but Sunday, after trailing
5-4 after two periods of
play the Stars struck for
five straight goals in the
final period to clinch the
win.
Hugh Hanly led the
Goderich assault with
four goals while team-
mate Doug Cruickshank
added two goals. Larry
Daer, Roger Lewis and
Chris Carter added one
goal apiece for the
juveniles.
The Stars line of Hanly,
Daer and Lewis ac-
counted for six of teams
nine goals, including four
in the final period out-
b_urst. While Hanly
scored four times and
added an assist linemates
Daer and Lewis were
instrumental in initiating
the plays. Daer scored
once and added five
assists for a six point
effort and Lewis chipped
in with a goal and three
assists.
Goderich held a 4-3 lead
after the first period of
play as Hanly and
Cruickshank each scored
twice. However, London
regained, the lead with
two second period goals
to hold a 5-4 advantage
heading into the final
period of play.
But the Stars clinched
the victory scoring five
goals in the first 11
minutes of play in the
final period.
On Monday the Stars
dropped a 5-4 decision to
Mooretown in exhibition
play in Mooretown.
The teams were tied 2-2
after the first period but
Mooretown outscored
Goderich 3-1 in the second
period to hold a 5-3 lead
after two periods of play.
Goderich scored one goal
in the third period but
their rally fell one goal
short.
Ian Chisholm opened
the scoring for Goderich
on an unassisted effort
just 20 seconds into the
game. After two quick

The Goderich Green
and Parent Midgets split
a pair of e'xhibition
games with tWo of the
better midget teams in
this part of the province
last weekend. Here
Saturday, the Goderich
midgets defeated
Belmont, leaders in the
Shamrock League, 8-5.
Sunday the Green, and
Parent squad was edged
3-2' by the Kitchener
"AAA" team in Kit-
chener on the strength of
last minute goal by the
fast -skating Kitchener
team.
Observers at the game
in Kitchener claimed it
produced some of the best
hockey that they had seen
in a long time. Goderich
fans will get a chance to
see a re -match of these
two teams here next
Monday at 8 p.m. when
Kitchener will play here.
That game will be the
fourth in four days for the
Green and Parent
midgets. They play an
exhibition game in
ti.?st

Lambeth 'Friday, meet
Mount Forest in a league
game here Saturday at 8
p.m. and then: play
Durham in another
league game here Sunday
At 2 p.m.
This hed'vy schedule of
games has been set up to
get the local squad ready
for competition in the
Silver Stick Tournament
over the - Christmas
holidays and for ltheir
exhibition game here
January 5 with the
touring Swedish midget
team.
The game with
Belmont here Saturday
provided some good
hockey, especially for the
first ,two periods. A rash
of penalties in the third
period slowed the pace
down in the latter stages.
Belmont scored first
when captain Doug
Wintermute beat Brian
Shewfelt in the Goderich
net, but Goderich came
back. with threegoals to
grab a 3-1 lead by the end
of the third period. Dan
Maillet, Mike Hodges and
Larry Madge were the
marksmen.
The Green and Parent
squad kept up the pace in
the second period When
David Moore and Rob
Trebish dented the .twine,
but Belmont came back
with goals by Wintermute
and Henry Nooren to
make it 5-3. Larry Madge
scored his second goal of
the game before the end
of the period to restore a
three goal lead for
Goderich.
Both teams scored
twice in the filial period.
Rob McDonald and Rob
Trebish got the Goderich
goals. Wintermute got his
third for Belmont and
Mark Dale scored the
other Belmont goal.
Belmont is a 'C'
division team, and were
OMHA midget cham-
pions last year.
The Kitchener team
that Goderich played
Sunday is that city's top
midget team' and was
rated at the beginning of
this season as having a
good chance at "AAA"
division honours in their
League. They are
currently in th d 40e in
the standings. , '
Larry Madge opened
the scoring against
Kitchener, finishing;;o4f a

and Dori Elliott, Bob
Germann • got that one
back for Kitchener, but
Mike Wedlock, playing
left wing on a line: with
Mike Hodges and John
Clement, scored on a
three way passing play
with his line mates.to give
Goderich a 2-1 lead at the
end of the first period.
Paul Edwards got the
only goal of the second
period and pulled Kit-
chener into a 2-2 tie.
It looked as though
that's how the game
would end as the" teams
skated through , a
scoreless third period,
but with 1:01 left in the
game, Carl Schlegel
scored a power play goal
from a face off in the
Goderich end tib- give
Kitchener the 3-2 victory.

Bantams let
one slip away

The Goderich Lakeport
Steel Bantams split a pair
of WOAA league games
last week defeating
Walkerton 4-2 and
dropping an 8-6 decision
to Listowel, Saturday.
The home -ice loss
Saturday *as disap-
pointing as the Bantams
had built up a 6-3 lead late
in the second period only
to have Listowel score
five unanswered goals in
the final 24 minutes to
clinch the win.
Goderich led the game
3-2 after one period of
play and managed to
build up a three -goal
advantage late in the
second period. But
Listowel responded to the
challenge by,, scoring
three quick goals in the
second period to tie the
score and then added the
only two goals of the final
period to win the game.
Three straight first
period goals by Paul Day,
Colin Alexander and Rick
Stahl put Goderich into a
three -goal lead but
Listowel scored twice
late in the period 'to pull
within a goal of the
bantam5
Dennis Kerr paced
Goderich with two goals
in the second period and
Brad Armstrong scored a
single.
Terry McCutcheon
paced the Listowel attack
scoring five goals and
assisting on two others.
The Steelers rebounded
the loss Sunday and got
third period goals from
Jim Mathers and Rick
Stahl as they edged
Walkerton 4-2 in
Walk. rton.
First period goals by
Dave MacDonald and
Brad Armstrong
propelled Goderich - into
an early two goal lead but
Walkerton whittled away
with a late first period
goal and another in the
second to tie the score 2-2
after two periods of play.
But Goderich didn't let
this' one slip away as
Stahl scored just 18
seconds into the period
and Mathers added the
insurance goal midway
through the period.
Goderich played in
Durham Wednesday
December 6 and will play
in -Mount Forest this
Sunday in a four -point
game.
Gee Gees dump
PortElgin 72-65
The Goderich Garb and Gear Gee Gees
basketball team continued their torrid pace in
the Lakeshore Mens Basketball League with a
72-65 victory over Port Elginelast Friday, at
GDCI.
The win was the sixth of the season for the
Gee Gees against only one loss and they remain
in top spot in the league.
Greg Beacom paced the douible Gs to victory
with an 1'8 -point performance in a game in
which Goderich led 37-29 at half time'. Port
Elgin outscored Goderich 36-35 in the second
half.
Paul Tortnass contributed 13 points while
team-mate Brian MacKenzie chipped in with 12
points. Warren and Jo Jo Watt scored 11 and
eight points 'respectively while Al Sygrove
added six points and Jeff Baechler and Bill
Gauley addedone basket apiece,
The Gee Gees now take their first place
record on the road playing in Kincardine
Friday and Walkerton Monday. It is ioubtfbl

Sailors dump Harriston 5-3,
extend lead to four points

The Goderich Sailors
increased their first place
lead to four points in the
Intermediate C standings
with a 5-3 victory over
Harriston, Friday,

• The win boosts the
Sailors season record to
six wins in seven games
and 12 points in the
standings. They lead
second place Lucknow
Lancers by four, points
and the two teams will
square off this Friday
night at 8:30 p.m. in the
Goderich and District
Community Center.
Mildmay is also tied
with Lucknow for second
place, but they enjoy a
game in hand on the
Lancers. Wingham, with
two wins in seven starts,
is in last place in the
grouping.
Dan Duncan scored two
goals Friday, the tying
and game winning goal,

win. The teams traded
three goals apiece in the
first period but Goderich
added two goals in the
second period to take a 5-
3 lead that stood as the
final score.
The lead changed
hands several times in
the opening period but
Rick Fremlin gave
Goderich a short-lived
one -goal lead with an
unassisted effort early in
the first period. Harriston
replied with tWo quick
goals to take the lead for
the first time only to have
Goderich tie the score on
a goal by Danny
Calquhoun at 13.19.
Doug Boyd then , put
Harriston ahead for the
second time with a goal
just one minute after
Colquhoun had tied the
game but Goderich got a
goal from Duncan late in
the period to, even the
count.
Duncan then scored
what proved yi be the
winning goal after five
minutes of play in the
second period. Paul Kelly
added an insurance goal
late in the second period
to wrap the scoring.
The Merchants will
host Lucknow Friday in
an important game and
Sunday they will play in
Fergus in a 2 p.m.
contest.
