Cinderella, that old
fairy tale we all know and
love so well, may never
be the same again — at
least, not once the
Goderich Little Theatre
gets through with it.
Opening night for the
laugh-alminute pan-
tomime of Cinderella
written especially for
GLT by Goderich's Brian
Markson is tonight at
8:30. It will play until
Saturday, evening also'
featuring a Saturday
matinee at 2 p.m.
A pantomime is a
popular English style of
play not to be confused
with the silent art of
mime. Unlike mime, this
play has plenty of
hilarious dialogue, in-
cluding several songs.
Thetchorus plays a very
irportant part in the play
as does the audience
"We really need
audience participation,"
says Anna Melski, the
play's director.
Mrs. ' Melski has only
been with Goderich Little
Theatre for about a year
and this is the first play
she's ever directed.
However, this is not to
say she has had little
experience in theatre. On
the contrary, she has
spent about 20 years With
the:London Little Theatre
group and about five or
six t years with Stage
Door -56 in Moncton, New
Brunswick. She has
assited in directing
other\ plays and was the
co-ordinator of GLT's
summer theatre per-
* formances in the jail yard
this year.
Cinderella., GLT's first
effort this year, seemed
plagaed , with problems
from, a outset. Mrs.
McIsk3 'honed 'otter' .30
pianists fore she could
find one to, accompany
the songs r the play. One
of the matin characters
got laryngitis and had to
give up her role. Several
of the cast members are
students who had to take
time out from rehearsals
to study for exams.

seemed difficult to get for
this play.
But all problems aside,
Cinderella is shaping up
to be a fine production
from the frolicsome dress
rehearsal I saw on
Sunday.
The play's characters
are created by veterans
and newcomers alike.
Cinderella herself is
played by Jo Anne Durst;
Buttons by' Clarence
Knight; the King by Arie
Van der Ende; Perry the
Fairy by Carrie Middel;
Madame Beadle by
Kathy Jenkins, (the
Queen of GLT Comedy);
the Ugly Step -Sisters by
Mitch Moore and Mike
Scott (and are they
ugly!); and the chorus
and various smaller roles
by Scott Collins, Andrea
De Winter, Mike Madden,
Shirley Hall, Barbara
Conlon, Dan Durst,
Karen Drennan and Alan
Van der Ende.
Phil Main Jr. wrote the
music for the play based
on the original theme
songs Brian Markson had
worked out with lyrics.
Lillian Simpson has been
playing piano for She
group's rehearsals and
Paul Baker from 'St.
Thomas will be or-
chestrating for the actual
performances.
It should be a light-
hearted, fun filled per-
formance. So get your
tickets at the box office

fast, if you haven't
already.
