Betty Cardno named chairman of homemakers

The recently in-
corporated Town and
Country Homemakers
organization elected a
nine -member board of
directors at an inaugural
meeting in Clinton
Wednesday.
The association began
operating a year ago with
a Canada Works grant
under the direction of a
steering committee.
Betty Cardno, off
Seaforth, Huron Home
Care Administra-tor, was
named chairman and
Catherine Walsh of
Goderich, Director of
Public Health Nurses of
Huron County Health
Unit, was named
secretary. A nine -
member board was
named as well.
A former homemaker,
Jean Young of
Teeswater, was hired as
the administrator
placement officer, with
an office in Wingham.
Nelly Gonie-Tak was
hired as development
officer.
Homemaking services
are available to any
resident of Huron County
who can buy the services
of a homemaker on a

Ruth Ann Smith who
operates the Bo'K Barn, a
division of Smith's Farm
and Garden Centre,
presented a demon-
stration of Christmas
flower arranging to the
members of the Goderich
Garden Club at their
meeting at the Robertson
Memorial Public School
on November 15. She
made that task which
most people undertake
quite timidly, appear
easy.
The Garden Club has
donated a fluorescent
light fixture to the
Bluewater Centre for the
Developmentally Han-
dicapped. Volunteers who
would help with the care
of plants to be ^grown
under the lights, are
welcome.
Mr. Ray Hlward of the
Royal Botanical Gardens
in Hamilton, who
presented a program to
the Club last year on the
use of plants as therapy
in nursing homes and
hospitals, is trying to
gather funds for a mobile
teaching unit so that he
can travel all through
Ontario instructing in the
use of fluoregcent lights
for growing plants.
The unit, which is a
mobile home fitted out for
that purpose, would cost
$28,000. Two thousand
dollars will be raised by
district clubs, $1,000 has
-been pledged by the
Ontario Horticultural
Association and all are
conditional on obtaining a
grant from Wintario.
The Goderich Garden
Chub will send $50 toward
this project.

the elderly, handicapped,
chronically ill in order
that they do not have to
go into a hospital or
nursing home. As well,
families can hire
homemakers to look after
children or other
dependents when absent
during holidays, illness or
convalescence.
Also buying the
homemakers service is
the Home Care Program
which provides health
care to selected patients
according to individual
needs. O.H.I.P. will pay
the charges for these
patients for a limited
time.
As well, the social
services and Family and
Children's Services may
help pay the
homenake•r's fees
where: a child needs care
during the absence of
mother or other person in
whose charge he is; or for
elderly, handicapped, illl
or convalescent who
require such services on
a part-time basis in
order that he remain in
his own home.
And lastly the Cancer
Society may buy the
services for people iho
wish to be cared for in
their own homes.
In her report, ad-
ministrator Jean Young

which allows people to
remain at home rather
than have to go to a
nursing home or a
hospital]
E.W. Oddleifson, reeve
of Bayfield, who was
attending the meeting,
remarked of the
homemaking agency: "A
great idea -- something
that has been needed for
a long time." ..
Both Mrs. Cardno and
Mrs. Young spoke of the
need to raise funds from
the private sector,
foundations and big
corporations in order to
assist private families in
paying for the
homemakers service
over a long period of
time. With the
organization being in-
corporated and
registered as a charitable
organization, anyone
giving a donation will be
able to use the receipt for
income tax purposes.
The board of volunteer
directors elected at the
meeting will meet
December 2 for their first
meeting to choose a
chairman.. They are:
