Four current topics
affecting agriculture' will
be featured at the Ontario
Agricultural College
(OAC) Agricultural
Conference, January 3
and 4.
The conference, called
Agriculture Concerns All
of Us, is sponsored by
OAC, the University of
Guelph and the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture
and Food.
More than 800 people,
including producers,
consumers and agri-
business representatives
are expected to attend,
says Dr. W. S. Young, co-
ordinator of agricultural
extension education at
OAC,.
The first day of the
conference features
concurrent sessions
updating weed control in
field crops, and
machinery systems for
manure management.
One of the highlights of
the day is the display of a
new weed spraying unit.
The cattle reproduction
program scheduled for
the morning of thq second.
day deals with controlled
breeding, bull fertility
and reproductive disease
problems. Separate
sessions for dairy and
beef producers are
scheduled for the af-
ternoon.
Speakers in the con-
current program on farm
land values will discuss
the implications of rising
land values. The program
includes demonstrations
of computer land price
analysis.
The Poultry Industry
School will be held in
conjunction with the
conference at the
Arboretum on January 3.
Detailed conference
programs are available
from Dr. W. S. Young,
Ontario Agricultural
College, University of
Guelph, Guelph, Ontario

a breakdown in com-
munications.
He continued "In
reviewing the
correspondence I must
say... the breakdown in
communications is dif-
ficult to understand.
Nevertheless, this
misunderstanding did
arise and was not brought
to my attention until I
commenced my in-
vestigation". This so-
• called breakdown in
communication has led to
a further delay in the
WBC's decision on the 22
claims for compensation
made by the widows and
families of the foundry
workers who have
" already been waiting for
more than a year for a
decision.
In July, 1977, the boar,d
received a copy of a 10 -
year study by Dominion
Foundries and steel Ltd.,
which discovered that
foundry workers over 45
years old are four and'a
half times as likely to
contract lung cancer than
workers in other parts of
the plant. Dofasco of-
ficials have pointed out
that these lung cancers
may be the result of
operations and processes
in the foundry 20 years
ago that no longer apply.
Dr . William
McCracken, executive
director of medical
services for the WCB,
said in an interview that
he sent the study to the
Labour Ministry's oc-
cupational health and
safety division with a
request for a detailed
evaluation, and•asked for
an analysis to determine
whether any other studies
show an increased in-
cidence of lung cancer in
foundry workers
elsewhere ine the world.
The extent of the
ministry's involvement
was to send a list of oc-
cupational health studies
in foundries to Dr.
McCracken last June.
However, Dr. McCracken
was under the impression
that the ministry was
continuing a detailed
investigation and held off
doing anything about the
claims before the Board
until the probe was
completed.
