Speaking at the public hearing of the Porter Commission where he presented the OFA brief, Hannam expressed strong disapproval over the proposed Ontario Hydro plan for nuclear generating stations and transmission corridors. He said it was, "en- tirely irresponsible to waste present foodland resources for any short- term industrial benefit. There must be a balan- ce." Hannam explained that shifting food production onto less productive land substantially increased the energy needs of the farmer and decreased the amount of production. ' This, he said, "will be reflected directly in higher consumer food costs." Hahnam explained the near 'total reliance this plan would place on uranium and coal, two exhaustable fuels, is undesirable and risky. "Ontario Hydro ex- pressed belief in the past in an energy mix," he added. "But now, despite all our oil problems, it wants to rely on only two fuel sources." Hannam said the OFA realized the need for surplus energy but could not support the destruction of our agricultural land for the purpose of exporting energy to the U.S. He added, if the generating stations are as safe as we're being told, why not build them in metro areas? "Why should the agricultural community be forced to accept risks and restrictive planning. measures." The " OFA brief recommended further: Ontario Hydro adhere to the Foodland Guidelines when ' (planning their transmission and generating sites; Ontario Government begin a policy of implementing alternative energy sources, especially those that are renewable and clean; Ontario . Hydro maintain an energy mix, with no single non- renewable fuel ac- counting for more than 50 percent of the Province's electrical . power requirements; Sales tax be , removed from alternative energy materials and equip- ment; and Ontario Government embark on a major energy con- servation program. Although she worries about her husband when climbing roofs, she did not stifle his desire to become a chimney sweep. Stephenson says he doesn't necessarily have to get dirty when cleaning a chimney and he always respects people's property by laying a heavy dust sheet in the area where soot might land. But he does get very black sometimes and when he comes home like this, his infant daughter Sherry doesn't know what to think of him. His wife says she has seen a laundry commercial. involving a chimney sweep and she knows just how the woman in the commercial feels - the clothes are hard to clean! ,..Chimney sweepers are not .regarded" with so much distaste these days. In fact their expertise is highly valued as more people become aware of the hazards of an un- cleaned chimne-y or stove pipes. Stephenson could be well on his way to a sweeping success!
