(Photo by Joanne Buchanan) Winter is almost here Have you been shop- ping this fall for your new winter coat? Some new boots? Mitts? A fur hat? If you are smart, you are probably getting ready for the cold and the snow. Dadmay be put- ting some extra in- sulation in the house walls or piling up some extra wood for the fireplace. Mom might be storing away fruit and vegetables for the time when the garden is under snow. Maybe she's cleaning the windows just once more before it is too cold for that job. Well; animals get ready for winter too. Dear Captain Comet, My name is Dawn Michelle McWhinney. My birthday is Tuesday, November 28 and I will be 2 years old. I live at 259 Gibbons Street with my parents who are Jim and Gail McWhinney. I also have two sisters, Joanne and Anita and a dog named King. Thanks for putting my picture in your column. Love, Dawn McWhinney. Did you know the squirrel 'wears a pair of ear muffs? Well he does...and he doesn't have to worry about losing them either. The squirrel's ear muffs are thick tufts of long, dark hair that grow on the tips of his ears in the fall to keep his ears warmer during the winter. Most animals get new winter coats, but they don't go to the store to buy them. They get them by growing an extra thickness of hair. That isn't even enough for some animals. The' Brookside happenings •BY MANDY MILLER AND JANICE POLLOCK On Tuesday, November 14th, the Grade 8 students took a bus trip to Toronto, accompanied by Mrs. Ander- son and Mr. Jewitt. They saw the CN Tower, the Royal, Qntario Museum and walked down University Avenue to the Parliament Buildings. While there, they saw Mr. Murray Gaunt, MPP, and Jeffrey Fillmore, their class- mate, who has beep serving as a page at the Parliament these last few weeks. All in all, the students enjoyed the trip and gained a lotfrom it. Schoolthockey has started for anotheh,s ason. There are three boy's teams: Butchers, with captain Steve Alton; Flyers, with captain George Alton; Flames, with Jamie Bere as captain. The first game was played after school on Wednesday, November 15th with a score, Flames 3, Butchers 2. The girls played their first game on Friday. On Tuesday morning Mr. Marshall Lawrence of Papua, New Guinea, came to the school to talk to Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 about life in New Guinea where he and his wife and family of four boys have spent the last t'en years. Mr. and Mrs. Marshall are mis- sionaries and translators of the Bible 4f GIVE A SILVER 4 of CHRISTMAS gfi A FINE COLLECTION OF SOLID STERLING SILVER AND KARAT GOLDS >h Designed and Crafted ° by ROBEla STODDART ti M.AITLANT RIVER k A# 'SILVERSMITHING 133 ST. The weasel is brown in summer, too, but white all winter...except for a black tip on his tail. These animals have a special reason for changing their coat color. If they stayed brown, their enemy, the hawk, could spot them in the snow a long distance away. But their white coats make them really difficult to find. Some animals, like the bear and the woodchuck, sleep all winter. Just like your mom, they store their food away...but the bears and woodchuck stoie it in their tummies. They get ready for their long sleep by eating a lot of food in the fall and getting quite fat. Their bodies give off the fat during the winter. And some of nature's creatures don't stay around for. the cold winter months. They go south. Most birds migrate by goingsouth for the winter. But birds aren't the only ones that migrate. So does the fur seal. It spends the summer on islands in the Bering Sea, just west of Alaska. But when winter comes, it swims as far as 3,000 miles southeast to spend the cold months in the warmer waters along the west coast of the United States. Are you ready for winter? Michael Neil Edwin Rodger, 'nine-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Rodger RR2 Auburn, recently met one of his namesakes, former astronaut, Neil Armstrong, at the International Plowing Match. Rodger, who was born July 20, 1969, the day Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the moon, was named after the three astronauts. He met Armstrong at the Plowing Match and managed to secure an autograph.
