YOU
and your health (unit)
BY K.D. SEEGER,
C.P.H.I., PUBLIC
HEALTH INSPECTOR
It's been a tough day for both you and your wife.
Nothing went right. To save time and further tension,
you decide to take your family out to dinner at a local
restaurant. All the members at the table prepare
themselves for the anticipated roast beef dinner with
mashed potatoes and lots of gravy.
When the servings arrive, the. vision you had of the
coming feast is shattered. As you take your first fork-
. ful, a long, curly strand of hair joins the food on your
fork. Adding to that, your wife complains about the
gravy being cold. This has got to be the last straw!
What do you do?
You could ignore the hair and finish the meal. After
all, nothing else could go wrong could it? You could
complain to the waitress -waiter • and request that
something be done- about it. Then make a mental note
to tell the Huron County Health Unit. Unfortunately,
not enough people complain to the waitress -waiter and
even fewer let the Health Unit know about their
dissatisfaction.
If a meal you have ordered does not fit your stan-
dards, you should not have to eat it. Tell the person
serving you. Should no satisfaction result, ask for the
manager or the owner. A concerned owner of an
eating establishment would be more than willing to
correct a possible error.
If the owner is not told about the problem, others
will have to suffer. Besides, you are going to spend
your hard-earned money for a delicious. meal without
the work and the fuss and you deserve the best.
If your complaint to the manager -owner has not
been handled satisfactorily, call or write the Health
Unit. Depending on the seriousness, of the complaint,
the public health inspector should be notified whether
the manager tries to help or not.
If the eating establishment is part of a chain, write a
letter to the head office and be sure to note at the
bottom that a copy went to the Health Unit.
No matter how you let the Health Unit know about
your dis-satisfaction, your name will remain con-
fidential and will never be released. Providing your
name will ensure the legitimacy of the complaint.
The public health inspector monitors and inspects
all eating and other food establishments (grocery
stores, butcher shops, etc.) on a regular basis. On
many occasions, the above situations are prevented
through the constant surveillance of food handling
procedures during an inspection.
However, a new inexperienced or a• careless em-
ployee cannot always be corrected right away. This is
one of the reasons why you, as a customer, when not
satisfied with the food you are paying for, should let
your feelings (dissatisfaction) be known. After all, the`
• owner wants to know if something is wrong. They want
you to come back.
