In 1903, Carey bought
the insurance business of
Charles F. Shaw and
carried- on in Shaw's
premises next to the
(West street) post office.
In 1930 the business, still
styled O.F. Carey & Son,
Ltd., was conducted in
the Masonic building.
For some years before
Philip retired he had an
office in the former Bank'
of Montreal building,
West street, Oswald was
an active member of St.
George's church, and at
the time of his death was
one'of the wardens.
OSWALD'S FAMILY
Some of the children of
Oswald Carey and Emily
Marlton were born on the
Colborne farm, others at
the Cambridge street
house.
Philip was wheeled
over in a baby carriage to
the Crescent house when
the family moved from
Cambridge street. Only
the youngest child, Helen,
was born in the house on
the Crescent.
The Huron Signal early
in 1881 carried an an-
nouncement: "Born in
Goderich, New Year's
Day, 1881, to the wife of
Oswald Carey, a son."
That was the firstborn
of the family, Albert
-.Dobr-ee.--In- due-eourse- he
married Anna Elinor
Downing, and they lived
in Seattle. They had five
children: Catherine
Elinor, George Albert,
William Marlton, Emily
Jane, Isabella Louise and
Alice Rosalie.
Edward Hunsdon, the
second son, was -born
before 1881 was out. He
later was with various
branches of the Bank of
Montreal and Bank of
Toronto:. He married
Gladys Marie Stafford,
and they lived in
Saskatoon.
..Rosalie Le Marchant
married F.C. Neltnor, a
civil engineer, who was
stationed in Goderich
when the Guelph and
Goderich Railway was
being completed. Their
home was in Chicago.
Harold De Sausmarei
served .. •in Princess
Patricia's Light Infantry,
first Canadian battalion
organized in 1914, and
was at Third Ypres. He
was wounded three times
in the course of his ser-
vice. He married Jennie
Almira. They had two
sons, Edward Harold and
Oswald • Conrad. Harold
died in Vancouver, May
20, 1974, aged' 88.
Rita Laurie married
Alexander Godwin
Nisbet, who was killed in
action at Vimy Ridge.
Her second husband was
John Harry Knight. They
made their home in
Victoria. Mrs. Knight
died in December, 1977.
Robert Dobree, after
attending school here
studied at Queen's
University. A lieutenant
in the 46th Battalion,
C.E.F., he was at the
Somme, Vimy, Hill 60,
Passchendaele and
Cambrai. He was com-
missioned in 1915, and
served in the army of
occupation until 1919. He
was a surveyor with the
Ontario Department of
Highways until
retirement. He married
in 1950 Edrie Beatrice
Tye, who died June 15,
1970. They had one son,
Robert. Mr. Carey died
July 5, 1974. He was a
member of St. George's
church. .
Conrad George was a
lieutenant in the 79th
Battalion, and was killed
in action at Zollern
Trench Sept. 16, 1116. He
was recommended
posthumously for the
Victoria Cross'. He
married Ida Elizabeth
Helen Hambly, and they
had two children, Conrad
and Elizabeth.
Louis Maitland was one
of the Menesetung Canoe
Club members who went
overseas in War 1. He
lived at Basswood, Man.,
and Victoria, B.C., where
he still resides.
Philip Falkland was in
his third year at Goderich
Collegiate Institute when
he answered the first call
for volunteers in August,
1914, and had the honor to..
serve in the First Bat-
talion, First . Brigade,
