NOVEMBER 16 1978 The Careys... ® from page 7A Nisbet, was killed in action at Vimy Ridge, John H. Knight, husband of Laurie Carey, was a commander in the Royal Navy. In the British Who's Who in Goderich public library are the names of a dozen Careys, including bishops, generals and scientists, but only one a resident of Guernsey, Major-General Laurence de Vic, of Courti)r,S;; Desperques, St. Martin's. French names (of Norman origin) are found through every generation of Careys: Dobree, De Beauvoir, Hunsden, De Sausmarez, Le Mar- --chant,.. Le Mesurier.--')~he Canadian Careys with such second names usually avoided using them. Historically, some of the old names recall unhappy associations. The first born of Lucius and Isabel Carey was named' Mary Boleyn. Sir Thomas Boleyn in England married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk. Their eldest daughter, Anne, was one of the wives of Henry VIII. She and her brother . George were beheaded on T`6V�ei Hllt gin` -1.536: _The other daughter, Mary, 3arried William Carey, and so far as known lived happily ever after. Lucius Carey was educated at St. Elizabeth's College in Guernsey, 1829-32. He was youngest of the sons of Dr. John Carey, of Frogmore (1794-1855) and his second wife, Henrietta Tupper. The eldest, Thomas, operated a business in Spain, retiring in 1861 to Frogmore. Rohais. Frederick Charles became a clergyman in Guernsey. Lucius, born May 8, 1820; 'belonged to th'e 16th generation, counting from Jean Careye of St. Martin's, 1393. He was 29 when he bought his first lot from the Canada Company. His wife would have been 26. • When Lucius Carey died in 1884, his widow and son Eugene • were appointed administrators of the estate. In the following year, a deed from the widow and four children, and a quitclaim by Eugene, conveyed the three farms to Oswald Carey, now married. He gave a mortgage back for $2,700, and paid it off in 1888. In that year Lots 13 and 14 were leased to James Tabb for 15 years, but the lease was surrendered after seven. (James Tabb, Colborne, had nine children, one of whom, Isaac, died a few year ago at Huronview, aged 86:) It was 1903 before Oswald Carey disposed of the farms to William Henry Thom. In 1869 Lucius had purchased for $350 four lots on Cam- bridge street in east -end Goderich. He built on Lot 1343 a brick cottage, now owned and occupied by Mrs. Ivadell Schram, and numbered 167'. _• Lucius died in 1884, but the Carey family, reduced by the departure of several boys to em- ployment elsewhere', lived there until in 1899 Oswald purchased from the widow of Joseph Williams, with assistance of his aunt Rita, the house on St. George's Crescent. He -lived there until his death on August 4, 1928•at the age of 72, wail before the stock market crash of 1929 in which the Careys, with thousands of others, "lost everything."
