The explanation ts simple: 1066. When William* of Normandy conquered England, he possessed the Duchy of Normandy, including the Channel Islands. The Duchy in due time was returned to' France, but the islands have con- tinued to be linked to Britain. In each there is a Receiver, who collects and • remits Crown revenues and discharges the liabilities of the Crown for certain ser- vices. This office has been held eight times by Careys, as well as the office of Jurat . (judge) and the highest of all, Bailiff. In 1288 there were Careys of some im- portance in Guernsey. In 1311there was a Philip Carey, a landowner, in St. Martin's Port, and from 1309 there havt been a succession of Careys with whom it has not been possible 1.0 establish definite relationship. Direct genealogical descent, recbgnized by the Herald at Arms, dated from 1393. A family history, begun by - William Wilfred Carey, carried on by Edith Frances Carey and completed in 1928 by Spencer Carey Curtis, has been published by J.M. Dent & Sons. There are nine pages of Carey names. "From the middle of the 18th century, when members of the family ,first took service out of the island," it is related in this volume,"there have been many in the Navy, Army, Indian Civil Service and Colonial services in all parts of the Empire. In the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny, Northwest Frontier of India, Egyptian cam- paigns, Boer War and finally the Great War, the family has pulled its weight." In the Army List of the then current year (1936, of 12 Careys listed as officers all except one belonged to the Careys of Guernsey, 'and in the Royal Air Force list three out of four, In World War I, five sons of Oswald Carey and' Emily MarItOn served in the Canadian Forces : Conrad -George, Harold De Sausmarez, Louis Maitland, Philip F. Carey and Robert Dobreet Conrad was killed in action. Also, Ritatarey's first husband, A.G. Turn to page 12A •
