November is amnesty
month for gun owners
BY DAVE SYKES
Better take your guns
to town boy.
Under , a special
program sponsored by
the department of the
Solicitor General of
Canada, November has
been declared amnesty
month. And under the
amnesty program all
Canadians are asked to
turn in any prohibitive
weapons to police and
register certain firearms.
Goderich Police Chief,
Pat King, said there has
been some confusion
among local gun owners
about the terms 9f the
amnesty. He explained
that all hand guns, except
antiques, including 22
calibre pistols must be
registered with °the local
police department.
Also all centre fire,
semi-automatic ' 'rifles
with a barrel less than
181/2 inches long must also
be registered. United
States Carbine M-1 guns
also require registration.
Normal hunting gun -s
with a barrel longer than
181/2 inches need not be
registered with the
police.
The program will run
through the end of
November and Chief
King said it was made
necessary because many
owners either . simply
ignored the registration
procedure or there is a
good chance that any
weapon registered prior
to 1960 was done in-
correctly.
The Chief recom-
mended that anyone
owning a hand gun or
centre fire rifle with a
barrel less than 181/2
inches in length contact
police about registering
the weapon. Owners
could face a charge if the
weapon is not registered.
Also, if anyone
discovers an
unregistered weapon in
their possession " and
would like to dispose of it,
they can simply turn it
into the police.
The amnesty also in-
cludes other prohibitive
weapons such as the
morning star, Yacqui
blow gun and nunchaki.

have been seized locally
and disposed of. Such
weapons can generally be
bought in the United
States, where their sale
and possession is not
illegal.
However since January
1, 1978 such weapons have
been declared prohibitive
weapons.
Chief King said that
any gun registered 20
years ago is not really
registered since the
procedure was handled
improperly and owners
must re -register their
firearms.
Gun owners can be
refused registration for a
certain weapon by police
but then have the option
to apply to a judge for
ownership registration.
Chief King pointed out
that after January 1, 1979,
all gun purchasers will
require a firearm
acquisition certificate to
purchase any type of
weapon. The certificate
would be valid for a five-
year period.
So if you own a han-
dgun, rifle or a weapon
from one of the wars that.
is not just a mantelpiece
trophy, andyou are
unsure of its registration,
check with the Goderich
Police Department. •

Lottery stunning
An elderly gentleman
won $100,000 in the lot-
tery. Since he had a bad
heart, his family was
concerned that the good
news might bring on a
heart attack. They asked
the pastor to come over to
break the great news to
the winner.
The pastor's approach
yeas subtle. He talked for

deftly slipped in this
question: ,"Tell me, Sam,
what would you do if you

Said Sam: "Why, I'd

half of it."
The pastor keeled over.
