West Street building old and new
BY JEFF SEDDON
A new addition to the
building stock on West
Street has planners and
architectural con-
servationists delighted.
The building now under
construction, was
specifically designed to
blend into the streets cape
on West Street and is a
mixture of old and new
that the Goderich
Architectural Con-
servancy Society has
been advocating . for
several years.
The building is being
constructed by Peter and
Frank Strickland and will
house a combination of
retail outlets and offices.
The two storey structure
has 7,000 square feet of
floor space that Frank
Strickland says can be
used for three retail
outlets on the ground
floor and two or four
offices upstairs. He said
there is no restriction
being placed on the use of
the floor space and if
someone wanted to use a
ground floor section for
office space that was
possible.
Nick Hill, of Hill And
Borgal Architects, said
he was "delighted" to be
involved with the design
of the Strickland Building
adding that the challenge
of the job was "what
urban planning is all
about". Hill, who is a
consultant for the
Goderich branch of the
conservancy society, said
the Strickland Building
represented the first
chance the society had to
prove that new buildings
can be blended into the
downtown commercial
area. He said the design
is "contemporary and
compatible with the
streetscape".
The architect pointed
out that the addition
would give the West
Street area a completely
new appearance. He said
the beautification plan
for The Square in-
volved radial streets and
with renovations to the
police station, con-
struction of the senior
citizens complex and the
town hall site in the same
area the result was a
"vital exciting change".
The two story structure
sports a large glassed
front allowing any
merchants to display
goods. The upper story
has a pitch -roof and a line
of vertical windows that
blend the new building in
with the old.
Hill said one of the most
challenging aspects of
designing the Strickland
Building was to "in-
tegrate" the second floor
entrance. He said many
of the entrances to up -
stair apartments or of-
fices in the old buildings
in the downtown area

were "pokey and un-
distinguished" and
because- of that many`
professionals and mer-
chants were "still
hesitant to go up". He
said that hesitancy was
not because of the stairs,
that have to be climbed
but because the entrance
was so obscure it was
difficult to notice.
The architect said the
entrance to the
Strickland Building was
"large, receptive and
attractive". He said it
provided space for
lighting and for
decoration and consisted
of a double entrance. He
added that .the upstairs
space provided a

New building on West Street to take on older appearance
Suncoast to pay PUC before • t plays
BY JEFF SEDDON
Suncdast " Estates will
•have to fork over about
$6,000 to the Goderich
Public Utilities Com-
mission for hydro service
for two lots on the south
side of Suncoast Drive
after the PUC voted
Thursday night not to
permit the development
firm to build houses with
temporary hydro service.
PUC manager Al
Lawson asked the
commission to support
him in a move to have
Suncoast install proper,
permanent hydro ser-
vices to building, lots in
the area. Lawson said one
lot in the ,area had been
given temporary service
by the utility to permit
Suncoast to build a house
and now the firm wanted
to build two more on the
same basis.

McCosh officiating.
Interment was in
Lakeview Cemetery,
Sarnia.
"There is no way we
can continue to service
the lots .on a temporary
basis," said Lawson;
The manager explained
that the temporary
service involved in-
stalling a hydro pole- and
running a line from the
utility's 27.6 KV tran-
smission line to the
house. He said the
transformer had to be
installed on the pole to
step the power down for
domestic use. He said the
area should be properly
serviced with an un-
derground cable' along
the street with proper
equipment for each lot.
He told the commission
that the owner of the
house temporarily ser-
viced was not happy with
the location of the hydro
pole and was complaining
that he couldn't get cable
television service.
Lawson said the cable
television company was
waiting for the PUC to dig
a trench to install its
services and wanted 'to
use the same trench ,for
the television line. He •
said Bell Telephone also
wanted to lay a cable in
the PUC trench.
Lawson apologized to
the commission for' being
"so vociferous" about the
lot servicing of the

"splendid view of the
town hall".
Frank Strickland said
he t nd his brother ,gave
much thought to the
building before com-
mitting themselves ex-
plaing that they carefully
looked around Goderich
for office and retail space
to rent and discovered
that there "isn't a place
in town you can rent". He
said they were looking for
a lohg term business
investment and are
looking for long term
clients for the building.
Frank said he felt the
building was a good
location for a
professional pointing out
that in 'many cases a
doctor establishing an
lend
office does not want to
renovate a 100 year old
house and still not have
what he wants.
He said he believed the
downtown area was
where buildings like this
should be located adding
that he felt the core area
off Goderich "Was not
going to dry up and
disappear". He said one
of the big problems was
constructing a building
that was attractive but
not too expensive. He said
he felt this building was a
good idea. He added that
he and his brother took
the idea to Hill, told the
architect what they
wanted, and gave him a
free hand in the design.
