Mechanical garbage men?
New system efficient,
A one-year study,
released recently by
, Environment Minister
Harry ' C. Parrott,
demonstrates a
mechanical garbage
collection system which
is more efficient and, in
the long run, cheaper,
than the conventional
manual method:
The study, which in-
volved over 1,500
households in Windsor,
Ontario began in 1976 as a
To discuss
energy and food
Representatives from
4-H clubs across Canada
will meet in Toronto next
month to discuss energy
use in food production.
Eight representatives
from each province and
several representatives
from the United States
will attend the 47th an-
nual National 4-H con-
ference, says Doug

Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food.
The conference,
sponsored by the,
Canadian Council ,'on 4-H
Clubs, will be held
November 7 to 13 in
conjunction with the 50th
Royal Agricultural
Winter Fair.
"Delegates to the
conference will tour,.
major food production
plants in Toronto to
discover the amount of
energy used in food
production," says -• Mr.
Wagner.
They will also attend
sessions explaining the
consumer price index.
These sessions will
compare food prices in
various parts of the
country. Delegates will
be asked to speculate on
reasons for varying
prices.
Other information
sessions feattired at the
conference will 'include
talks about Canada's
major energy resources.
"Another highlight of
the conference will be a
visit to the Royal
Agricultural Winter
Fair's first Youth Day,
November 9;' says Mr.
Wagner.
In Ontario, more than
25,000 rural young people
participate in 4-H

tribution of $100,000 to the
study, in the form of
equipment necessary for
the successful un-
dertaking of the project.
The equipment in-
cluded plastic wheeled
garbage containers and
special' collector truck
equipment which
eliminated most of the
heavy lifting normally
required of the
householder and of the
collection crews. •
Back illijuries sustained
through lifting heavy
weights are the greatest
occupational hazard for
municipal • waste
collectors.
In one study area, two-
man back -loading
collector -trucks were
used. Householders
wheeled 90 -gallon con-
tainers to the curb, and a
crew member then
wheeled the containers to
the back of the truck
whexe they were

In another area, a one-
man, side -loading
collector -truck was used.
The truck' was driven to
the curb side where a
mechanical arm lifted
individual 90 -gallon
containers or communal
300 -gallon containers,
emptied them, and
returned them to the
curb.
Side -loading collector
trucks proved more ef-
fective in the study due to
their speed and strength
in lifting and reduced
manpower requirements.
"I certainly believe
that the study and
Environment Ontario's
contribution towards it,
were well w`orthwhile,"
said Dr. Parrott, "not
only has the study
demonstrated the ef-
fectiveness of such a
method, but it will enable
us to provide valuable
information on
mechanical garbage
collection to
municipalities in the
Province who are in-
terested in improving
