GDCI Vikings continued their march toward an undefeated season in Huron Perth Conferencesenior football play here last Thursday with a 56-0 whitewasn over the Listowel Lords. The victory was the Vikings fifth straight shutout in five league galbes. The senior Vikings - ended their season in fine style winning their sixth consecutive game without a loss by humiliating Exeter 62-0, in Exeter Tuesday. In their six Huron-' Perth conference vic- tories the Vikings out- scored the opposition by an unprecedented 346-0. The defence held all opposition scoreless in all six games. During regular season play the lowest score the Vikings registered was 53 when they blanked Stratford Central 53-0 in the opening game of the season. The Vikings played only one exhibition game thisyear and dumped Sarnia 42-7 The playoffs begin with Semi-final action here next Tuesday.The Huron- Per'th,championship game will be played Saturday, November 11. The game with Listowel .was ` a tough, physical. game despite the obvious domination by the Vikings both of- fensively and defen- sively. The Vikings sustained several injuries which left a few of them in the doubtful category going into Tuesday's game with the Panthers. Offensive centre Ben Worsell was perhaps the least likely to play because of a shoulder injury suffered in Thursday's game. Randy Little, Dave MacKenzie and Dennis Donnelly each scored two touchdowns while Mark Frayne and Stuart Crew had one touchdown apiece for the Vikings. Eric Mitchell converted all eight major scores. Little ran 22 yards on a sweep in the first quarter and went over from the 10 yard line on another sweep in the second quarter. MacKenzie had a 55 yard punt return and a 70 yard pass and run play from Dennis Don- nelly go all the way for his majors. Donnelly scored on a four yard dive and went 56 yards on a pass and run play from Jon Barz for second quarter touchdowns. Frayne ran a punt back 60 yards for his -soere. Rookie Stuart Crew took the ball in from the two' yard line to complete the Viking scoring romp. The Vikings had two other touchdowns called, alloys third in volleyball by TD The Huron Perth Conference boys' volleyball championship tournament was held last Thursday in Listowel. The GDCI seniors ended up in third place with a six win - four loss record on the day's play. Coach Bill Worsell's team - was the only, senior team from the Huron division to qualify for ,the championship tour- nament. They finished 'behind St. Marys and Listowel. The Vikings Split garnes with -St.' Marys, the eventual champions, took two games from Norwell and Stratford Northwestern, split with Mitchell and lost two to Listolrel. The junior Vikings, coached by Ran Lane, also qualified for the tournament but managed only two victories in their ten games. Goderich victories came over St. Marys and Mitchell. Junior girls hold down second spot BYTD The GDCI junior girls' basketball team strengthened their hold on second place in Huron - Perth Conference play last week, winning 39-12 over Mitchell here Tuesday and 40-16 over Wingham Madill Thur- sday in Wingham. The victories give the Vikings a record of seven wins in eight starts ins.league play. Tracy Jewell had 12 points to lead her team to the victory over Mitchell. Sonja Lapaine and Theresa Osborn had eight points each. Teresa Kovacs had four while Barb Conlon, Teresa Donnelly and Susan Thompson had two points apiece and Sharon Burbine added one point for the Vikings. - Sue Vanderbert had four points to lead Mit- chell_ Tracey Jewell played a key role in pacing the. Vikings' offence again Thursday, 'getting 15 points against Wingham. Sharon Burbine hit for 10 and Sonja Lapaine added seven. Theresa Osborn contributed'six points and Robin MacDonald got two for the winners. The Vikings played here Tuesday against Listowel and travel to Clinton Tuesday to finish off regular season play. Playoffs begin next Thursday. The Vikings played in a tournament in Stratford Saturday, losing both of their games. In first round' action, the Vikings dropped a 62- 35 verdict to Waterloo's Glenview Parka The Vikings ran into foul trouble, picking 9p over 30 fouls in the game, and giving the» fine shooting Glenview team too much of an edge at the free throw line: Coach John Geiger was pleased with the play of his second string, especially Mona Gleason who scored 13 points and Robin MacDonald who had 12. Barb Conlon with three points, Sharon Burbine, Teresa. Donnelly and Theresa Osborn, with two each, and Janice McClinchey, with one point, round out the Viking scoring. Pat Blumenthal was the game's top scorer with 29 points for Glen- view Park. The GDCI starting five ran into trouble again in the Vikings second game against Stratford Cen- tral, falling behind 22-13 at half time_ Coach : Geiger again inserted his second stringers and they responded, closing the gap to six points in the third quarter. Central won the game 40-28, paced by Mary Britian's nine points. Tracy Jewell had eight for the Vikings_ Sonja Lapaine, Robin MacDonald and Barb Conlon had five points apiece. Tuesday here, the Vikings outdistanced Mitchell by a score of 60- 24 and Thursday in Wingham they came out 41-35 winners over the F. E. Madill girls. The game against Mitchell was strictly no contest as coach Donna Doidge's squad put pressure on the out- classed ,Mitchell tem to grab a 34-13 lead at�alf- time. Lucie Turcotte, with 14 points, and Heidi Elliott, with 12 were the Vikings in double figures: Audrey Vandenheuvel had eight and Denise Mitchelmore hooped six points for, the winnerrs. Audrey Dundas. was Mitchell's top scorer with nine points. The Vikings got two touch- downs in the second quarter. Rob McDonald got his first of the season on a three yard dive and tailback Mike Wedlock went over on a seven yard blast. offensive backfield was tailback Mike Wedlock, with 139 yards. Hard running Larry Madge picked up 95 yards. Rob "T" McKDonald and Ken Reid shared the fullback slot, rushing for 41 yards and providing some solid blocking for their running mates. Steve Frayne rushed for 85 yards_ - The Viking offence has accumulated a total of 250 points in six games, the highest output of any team in the conference. Offensive coach Baker w credits his offensive line for much of the scoring power of his unit. Defensively, the Vikings held the Lards to 146 yards and five fall ,°St downs. Next was Pete Black, Mike Carter, Al Kyle, Harrison Schock and John Hessels all with 21, John Anderson hit 20 and Brad Mann and Glen Dougherty, a new shooter, hit 14. Cross country runners place by TD The WOSSA . cross- country running championships were held last Friday near London, and three GDCI runners made good showings in the stiff competition there. . In the midget girls division, Jackie Daltr finished 40th in a field of 110 runners. Dennis Aubin was 37th out of 160 entries in the midget boys competition. Rob Cox placed eighth among 89, competitors in the senior bays division.
