HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1978-10-26, Page 34nd n with Martha How are you doing with the -metric system? They say that 98 per cent of the world knows it - what is the matter with the Canadian and American slowpokes? Many Americans feel as many Canadians do, that they don't want to be bothered with it, they just can't see why we can't stay on the Standard System of Measurement. If they , had been working, during the last war, on any part of gun or airplane production or other war equipment, they would understand why there was so much Martha Rathburn ap- pears weekly in The Signal -Star cussing and frustration when parts made in North America would not fit the same type of machine or gun made on the continent. Many lives have been lost over this. Also our Canadian and American boys and families stationed overseas, for even a short time, came back saying the Metric System was 'so much easier than our odd measurements. And too - it is far easier to Iearn metric measure by simply using it, rather than always comparing it to inches, feet and utiles. Luckily our children are learning the metric measure in primary schools thus having an advantage over their parel ts. The sciences did not suffer any great change since they have always been taught using the Metric System. Drugs and medications have always been in metric - and a great many people think of the time of day as 1500 hours (3 p.m.) since 12 o'clock is 1200 hours, 1 o'clock 1300 hours - so three is 100 hours, and so it goes. We already know nearly half of it so - how are YOU doing - I'm still confused! Anyway, 1000 ML equals 1 L (litre), 1000 MM equals 100 CM equals 1M. 1000 M (Metre) equals 1 KM (Kilometer). Most things that come in litres pour, splash and spill. So, Metric - it's worth the change. It's a better way to measure . How did you enjoy the Country Fair last Wed- nesday and Saturday? The people taking part were happy with the way their crafts were selling"' some of them were going to be pushed to have enough on hand for Saturday. It is a very nice show.. That statement is emphasized by the bus Don't bring trouble indoors Befo. you move houseplants indoors, check them for insects and diseases, •advised. Bob Fleming, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food extension horticulturist. "During the summer out of doors, houseplants are exposed to a variety of insects and diseases you don't want indoors. Once inside, these problems can spread to other. houseplants." Mildew is the most common disease that plants encounter out - Which One is the Drop-out? High Blood Pressure Treat it ... and live. This disease ap- pears as a white, powdery `coating on the leaves.- • Pick off and destroy the affected leaves, and spray the plant with a fungicide such as Benlate, or Benomyl, Mr. Fleming recommends. A variety of insects attack houseplants during the summer months. These can be eliminated with diazinon, says Mr. Fleming. It doesn't take long for tiny whiteflies to spread to neighbouring plants indoors. Check for this insect by tapping the plant gently. If they are present, you will notice a white cloud o'insects fluttering around the bout, loads of people that visit from -afar. It has been wonderful for me to see this group of Colborne women start so bravely with a few timid craftspeople to become proficient in their craft and enjoy a show of this kind. If you want to know - I'm , real proud of the whole lot of them. I had mentioned a few weeks ago, the nice little "Art Gallery" created downstairs in the library on Montreal Street. At the time an exhibit from London Art Gallery was hanging there and I enjoyed seeing it and hoped others have. 1 noticed that Mona Mulhern, a very fine artist, mentioned the need in her interview recently. As she has said, it could become a regular gallery if someone would just take it one as a project. We have a great number of clubs, organizations, other groups and regular service clubs besides the Scouting groups who relight think of helping us to have this nice little gallery, working. There are enough artists and photographers in town interested in having their work displayed to get this thing rolling. Bill Partridge of the Huron County Library would certainly like to hear from you. Perhaps even the Senior Citizens' groups could lend a hand - after all it is only to babysit the exhibit for a couple of hours. At least I hope you will think about it and DO something about it. Each group donating a few hours a week would really get this show going. It took a lot of work - all volunteered - to put "The Little Gallery" in shape. Bill Partridge, Jim Boland, Bill Hayward and a few others lugged and painted. Sally MacEwan, Bonnie' Empson and others worked at drapes and other things to make the pl st k on in G th pr Cr pl Th La Sa be th ace comfortable. So ow they have things arted - PLEASE help to eep it rolling even if it is ly on the "busy" nights the library. Love, Martha leaves. go Scale insects appear as th varnish -like moulds on the leaves, petioles or soft Ma part of the stem. sp If you notice" tiny, Jos cotton -like balls in the Cli axils of the leaves, your O plant probably has mealybugs. These Kn serious pests suck the sap 0 from the plant, causing be loss of vigor. Mites are microscopic and in size and therefore D s s difficult to diagnose. O Moderately affected plants will have a be generally unthrifty ap- pearance. Severely af- fected plants will have damaged, papery leaves. Since some of these problems are difficult to identify, Mr. Fleming suggests spraying with recommended in- secticides as a precautionary measure. After moving plants indoors, isolate them from other houseplants for a week to 10 days. MIDLAND DOHERTY LTD.
