Auburn residents will
'be seeffe,'`a 'new 'f ce-
;through the ricket at the
local post office. Jewell
Plunkett has been of-
ficially sworn in as the
new post . mistress for
Auburn.
Mrs. Plunkett was
among a , number of
tenders for the job when
Ken Scott decided to
retire from the position.
The l post office' is
' nothing new to Jewel. She
has had a postal route for
five years and feels that
has helped prepare her
for the new position.
As of November Ken
will have served as
postmaster for 20 years.
Alfred Rollinson
managed the,( post office
for #5 years before Ken
took over.
"I am looking forward
to'the job Jewe11 said an
her first full day as
postmistress on Friday.
Jewel lives two houses
down from the post office
so neither hail nor sleet
nor dead of night will
keep her from getting to
the office. Jewell and her
husband Andy have five
children, three of - whom
are at home.
"Andy will be taking
over the postal route"
said Jewel. "He knows
the route as -•he helps me
every day."
The post office is
located in the old Orange
Hall and before that, it
was across the street.
The present building is
owned by Ken Scott who
rents it to Mrs. Plunkett

Legion with 15 people
present.
All committee and
executive reports were
read and adopted.
The upcoming dance
being held at the
Lucknow Community
Complex on . Saturday,
November 4 was
discussed and a good
turnout is hoped for this
event.
The members present
were asked if they
wahted to help the local
police on Hallowe'en and
the majority of the
members stated they
were willing.
It was also decided that
the chili would change
their meeting place from
the Legion to MacKay

A discussion was held
as to whether the club
would go ahead with a

It was decided that this
would be done.

postal authorities.
Bert McCreath, from
the Goderich post office,
brought out the papers to
be signed and officiated
at"the transfer of the job
recently.
After 20 years Ken said
he'll miss the job and the
regular routine but
"would roll .with the
times."
The ;activities at a
small post office include
everything from taking
care of COD's to handling
money orders.
"In a larger office
everyone has their own.
jobs to do but here you
have to know and do a bit
of everything," said Ken.
"It is like being a
general practitioner,"
Ken said.
Ken will be staying on
for a few weeks longer
until Jewel gets to know
the ropes. Born and
raised in and near
Auburn, Jewel is familiar
with all the people and
names. "Being so close is
real handy'.' Jewel said.
"And coming into sort
mail every morning for
the route for the past five
years has really gotten
me into a good habit."
The post office will
have the same hours as
before open five days
between 8:30 „o 12, and
from 2 to 5 and until noon
on Saturdays.
If' Jewel runs into any
problem, Ken will still' be
associated with the postal
system as he has a postal
route which is manned by
Orville McPhee.

advertising obviously
pays off. This year, about
4,000 people visited the
Country Fair during the
two days it was on, with
two busloads of people
arriving from Toronto on
Saturday. Other out -of-
`_ -town visitors came from
Cambridge, Sarnia,
London and Michigan.
There were about 70
exhibits this year

The fair has always

Wednesday and Saturday
in order togive more
people a chance to attend.
"Some say it was too

Country Fair every year
is a bigjob says Mrs.
Hardy, but with the co-
operation of her com-
mittee, she is planning
the 14th annual fair for'
next year. Along with her
weaving classes, the)
planning keeps her mind
occupied, she says.
More than that, the
Country Fair serves as a
showcase for the talented
people of this area, thus
serving its original
purpose. It is a fine
example of what a small
group of people co-
operating together for a
common goal can do.
