JOANNE DUCHANAN
Colborne Township's
annual Christmas
Country Fair has come
and gone once again and
it was another fine
example of what good
old-fashioned, spirited co-
operation can do.
The first Christmas
Country Fair got started
about 13 years ago when a
group of women from
Colborne Township at-
tended a meeting on
community programs.
The speaker at the
meeting was from the
Ministry of Culture and
Recreation and he told
those present that if they
wanted something done,
they had to do it for
themselves.
So, the ladies took the
speaker up on that
suggestion in order to
promote the artists and
craftsmen in their area.
They decided that they
would each rent a table at
Carlow Hall to display
their own crafts and they
asked the . Women -'s
Institute to serve tea and
help them out. As they
made plans, word
travelled and on the day
of the fair, the whole
downstairs at Carlow
Hall was filled with
craftsmen and their
displays. So many people
visited that fair, which
was the first of its kind in
Western Ontario, that
"the door (to the hall)
never shut once", ac-
cording. to fair convener
Mrs. Wilmer Hardy.
Mrs. Hardy was on the
craft

committee , which
organized the first fair
along with Mrs. Robert
Bean, the late Mrs. Annie
Lamb, Adelaide.Feagan,
Mrs. Roy Eason and Mrs.
Olive Allen.
After the first fair, it
was obvious to the
committee that if they
were to hold another,
they would need more
room. They held bees and
other events to raise
money. Then they hired a
carpenter to fix the up-
stairs of Carlow Hall and
they papered and painted
it themselves. When the
renovations were com-
pleted and the upstairs
inspected, the committee
was able to use this extra
space for their second
fair.
Eventually thoi. gh, the
fair took off and ex-
panded to such an extent,
that it outgrew Carlow
Hall, Someone suggested
it be moved to Saltford
Valley Hall which was
also in Colborne Town-
ship and so it was moved
there about four or five
years ago.
"At first I didn't think I ,
would be able to handle it
in a bigger place," said
Mrs. Hardy. "But I got
tremendous co-
operation."
Mrs. Hardy gives a lot
of credit to her com-
mittee, which this year
consisted of Mrs. Robert
Bean, Mrs. Koop de
Groot, Mrs. Edna Moore,
Mrs. Frank Allin, Mrs.
Dorothy Fisher, Mrs.
Blanche Kerr and baking
convener, Mrs. Bernice
Fisher.
The name Colborne
Township's Christmas
Country Fair was first
adopted because, by
having Colborne in the
name, the organizers
could get Carlow
Hall free of charge. It

women and Colborne
Township artists and
craftsmen still get first
choice of a spot for their
displays with second
choice going to those in'
Goderich. Mrs. Hardy
also tries to 'get several
quality craftsmen from
outside the area to come
and set up a display at the
faireach year, craftsmen
with something different
to offer.
Craftsmen are charged
$1 for their table and they
are allowed nib more than
eight feet of space. Each
craftsman from outisde
Colborne Township is
'required to donate a craft
for a door prize.
The Christmas Country
Fair is strictly a non-
profit event to promote
craftsmen and give them
'a chance to sell their
work. The fair has a quilt
committee which makes
a quilt to sell tickets on
every year. The money
from these ticket sales,
plus the small amount
charged to craftsmen for
tables and the small
admission fee of 25 cents
goes toward payment for
the hall, parking and
advertising.

Edna Shaw, left, and Jean McKee set up' a display
booth at the Colborne Christmas Country Fair last
week, to promote their new business, The Flower
Pot. The two women are in a four way partnership
with Shirley Hazlltt and Dorothy Feagan and make
dried flower arrangements to decorate table set-
tings, rooms and anything else the customer wants.
