Worth •a child's life. Operating from this principle, Children's Aid Societies are offering various programs to help parents with child management problems. The Preschool Parent. Centre, for example, offers an intensive training program for parents of youngsters with behaviour problems and development delays. Mothers and preschoolers attend three or four mornings a week for a minimum of about three months. Fathers are also invited to visit the centre and par- ticipate in some of the training sessions. An unusual feature of this centre is that parents who have received help through the program in turn teach other parents and children. This gives them the opportunity •to reinforce and expand their knowledge and skills, as well as saving the costs of full-time staff. As a result, more families can be served at less cost and parents earn from their peers. Just to know someone else is experiencing problems with their kids can remove some of the worry. The trained parent closely observes and records the child's behaviour in groups and alone with his mother or father. The mother in training learns to use behaviour modification techniques on her child, and develops programs to modify certain behaviors at home. She responds positively to acceptable behaviour at home. She responds positively to acceptable behavior, keeps calm, and ignores undesirable behavior unless it's dangerous. -Chtildren with development delays are individually tutored by the parent in basic, language, motor and self- help skills. When not in training sessions, these children join their brothers and -sisters in the playschool. Christmas bureau... Tel.: • prenticeship of government An intensive in- formation campaign has been started to promote the merits of ap- prenticeship to Ontario employers in the manufacturing in- dustries. This month, 44 men and women representing the ministry of colleges and univer- sities will be visiting over 4,000 manufacturers not currently involved in apprenticeship training to discuss with them the advantages of hiring and training their own ap- prentices. "Ontario's economic well-being fo. depends largely on the continued success of our manufacturing in- dustries," says the Honourable Bette Stephenson, M.D., minister of colleges and universities. "Industry requires skilled tradesmen; Ontario has tripe people to fill the iobs. but first they must be trained. The ap- prenticeship programs, administered by my Ministry, provide that training." The Ministry representatives will be calling on small and medium-sized industry throughout the province. They will meet face -toy face with employers to explain Ontario's ap- prenticeship system. "We shall be iden- tifying some of ' the real manpower needs of in- dustry; we want to convince many em- ployers to start an ap- prenticeship program in their companies and to hire apprentices," adds Dr. Stephenson. "Skilled workers are not created overnight; their training takes time. Industry must train now to meet its needs." 2:00 - 5:00 and 6:30 8:30 .D•C.l, AUDITORIUM Advertisement .Published By DEARBORN STEEL TUBING 1978 TAXES TOWN OF GODERICH THIRD AND FINAL INSTALLMENT DUE NOVEMBER 3, 1978 Payable at any local chartered bank or Victoria 8.
