preliminary plan could be
drawn to scale and put on
a regular map to see how
it would meet airport
criteria. If approved, it
could possibly be used as
a final guide for future
development at the
airport.
RADIO SYSTEM
In other business, the
airport committee
decided that a radio for
the airport was an
"essential piece of
equipment" and they
agreed to the purchase of
a ten channel radio
system costing around
the $800 mark, giving the
development sub-
committee power to act
on this.
Only two of the ten
channels on the
suggested radio would be
used for now but channels
could be added later as
needed. Also Business Air
Services would be able to
service the recom-
mended- radio whereas a
smaller, cheaper set
Would have to be sent
away to be serviced.
The airport committee
felt that a radio com-
munications systein was
needed at4..i ie_.._.airport
from both 'a safety and
convenience point of
view. Maintenance
'operators or the airport
manager could be in
formed by radio when
aircraft was approaching
in order to clear out of the
way or to find out what
-the aircraft would need
when it landed so it could
be prepared for.
DEPUTATION
Glen Machan ap-
proached the airport
committee requesting
that he and his partner
Don Stewart be allowed
to build a hangar at the
airport to house a single
private aircraft. The
hangar would be a
plywood structure 36 feet
wide and 26 feet long to be
set over top of the tie
down which is presently
rented for $10 a month.
The structure, he said,
could be easily
disassembled 'at the
committee's requesjt.
The airport committee
agreed to recommend to
town council that Machan
and his partner be
allowed to build a hangar
with the details for
location to be worked out
and the necessary
agreement developed
with the Commissioner of
Works and the airport
manager. Machan and
his partner would be
requested further to
reapproach the com-
mittee about the hangar
after It had been up for
one year.
MANAGER'S
REPORT
Airport manager Ed
Scruton gave his monthly
report stating that his
main jobs of latle had
been fencing, cleaning
out the pump house,
preparing for snow
removal and erecting a
tourist sip on airport
property near Highway
21. ,
He suggested looking
into the costs of putting in
a larger tank for fuel
storage. At present the
airport has a 1,000 gallon
fuel tank and Scru,ton,
said the sale 'of I fuel
averages between 1,500
and 1,600 gallons a
month.
It was decided to
disband the maintenance
subcommittee., Dick
Speers of that sub-
committee said, "There
is an airport manager
now and we'd just be
getting in his way.
Besides it is becoming too
technical for part-time
people anyway."
The committee
discussed Colborne
Township's secondary
plan as it pertained to the
airport. It was decided to
table the matter for
further clarification. As
the airport committee
understood it, the airport
land would be prezoned
for airport use with the
township being able to
call for a development
agreement when
necessary.
CORRESPONDENCE
The committee decided
to_ send _a_..letter_ to- Tile–
_ity of Toronto PI, :fiing
Board in response to
notification of a public
meeting indicating the
committee's dismay at
the possible downgrading
of the Toronto Island
airport.
A letter from the
Western Foundry
Company Limited
requesting permission to
build a hangar at the
airport capable of
housing two or thre
aircraft was followed by
a verbal report that the
company had further
notified that due to the
time factor and the un-
certainty of the proposal,
they would prefer to wait
until spring to build a
hanger. It was decided to
send a letter back to the
company telling
representatives to do
their talking in the winter
if they wanted to go
ahead in the spring.
The committee' also
decided to submit a letter
to the Airport
Management Association
of Ontario regarding the
services of William
Clark, a' well-known
aviation lawyer 'from
Toronto. Mr. Clark is to
be a guest at an
association meeting in
Deterqber fo field any
quest' ns in the legal
area with respect to
airports.
A letter from Transport
Canada' informing the
airport committee that
due to Government
spending cutbacks,
financial assistance
available to community
groups airports, had been
terminated; was received
and ` filed. The airport
committee's request Ar
assistance is to be kept on
