How good are the GDCI
senior Vikings?
That's a question which
may, never be answered
in this season's Huron
Perth Conference football
play.
After their fourth
straight lop -sided shutout
victory over their op-
position here, a 57-0 rout
over Stratford Nor-
thwestern last Thursday,
the Vikings have out-
scored their opponents
228 points to none. So far;
the Vikings have not been
seriously challenged.
Today (Thursday) the
Vikings take on the
Listowel Lords who, if
nothing else, are usually
physically tough.
Tuesday, the Vikes finish
their regular schedule
with the South Huron
Panthers in Exeter. The
Panthers are the most
frequent opponents of the
Vikings in Huron -Perth
Conference finals and
may provide their biggest
challenge again this year,
but comparative scores
so far make the . Vikings
look like odds-on
favourites in both these
games.
Against Northwestern,
the Vikings got a pair of
touchdowns from both
Dave MacKenzie and
Dennis Donnelly.
MacKenzie romped 70
yards on a first quarter
punt return for his first
touchdown and caught a
10 yard pass from Don-
nelly in the second
quarter for the other.
Donnelly went 21 yards
off -tackle early in the
game and scored on a five
yard sweep for the
Vikings last touchdown.
Ben Worsell scored his
first touchdown of the
year on a 35 yard fumble
recovery in the second
quarter.
Other Viking touch-
downs were scored by
Mark Frayne on a 25 yard
sweep, Chris Wood on a
two yard dive and Randy
Little on a 13 yard sweep.
Eric Mitchell kicked
seven converts and added
one single on a second
quarter kickoff but his
kicking prowess was no
more impressive than his
fine play at offensive
guard all afternoon. All of

Coaches Ray Donnelly
and George Young were
pleased with the entire
defensive unit of the
Vikings,
Chris Wood,"` Rick
Leddy and Perry
Teichert were strong
along the defensive line.
However, Mark Frayne
was the defensive star of
the piece, intercepting
five errant Huskie
passes.
Despite the obvious
success of their Vikings
so far, the coaches still
find room for concern.
Three turnovers, on two
fumbles and an in-
terception, and ten
penalties, for a total of 160
yards against the Vikings
(more yards than any of
their opponents have
gained on them in a game
this year) were areas
Donnelly and Young were
not happy about.
Vikings dump Stratford 32-0
BY TDC
In a battle. of two
previously unbeaten
junior football teams in
the Huron Penta Con-
ference here last Thur:
sday, the GDCI Vikings
emerged victorious by a
23-0 score over the
Stratford Northwestern
Huskies.
The Vikings helda slim
1-0 lead at halftime on a
35 yard single kicked by
Larry Boyce, and it was
not until late in the third
quarter that tailback
Mike Wedlock broke
through for the game's
first touchdown on an
eight yard off -tackle run.
Wedlock, on the Limp with
an ankle injury, was
playing in his first of-
fensive series of downs in
the game. Boyce, whose
booming punts provided a
substantial advantage
over Stratford in each
exchange of the ball,
kicked the convert to give
the Vikings art 8-0 lead
after three quarters.
The Vikings broke
things open in the final
quarter. Boyce kicked
another single and then
half -back Larry Madge
bulled his way over from
the 12 yard line for the
second Viking touch-
down. Brian . Shewjelt
scored on a five yard off -
tackle play moments
later. Boyce converted
both of the fourth quarter
majors.
The game was a
defensive struggle for the
,most part, and both the
Vikings : and' Huskie
defences were tough: The
Vikings offensive line had
trouble containing the
blitzing Stratford
linebackers, and the
Vikings' defence took
away the Huskies pass
attack, containing their
downfield receivers all
afternoon. Viking deep
backs Chris .Pitre, Mike
Frayne, Steve Frayne
and Wedlock all played
well. The defensive
l.ineplay by the Vikings
kept pressure on the
Huskie backfield and led
to several turnovers late
in the game. Steve Rob McDonald did a
solid job at defensive end
and also filled in capably
and Ed Van Osch in- for injured fullback Ken
`tercepted passes and
Rick Muck, assisted by
Steve Walters, recovered
a fumble.
Larry Madge and Van
Osch, called the best two
linebackers in the league
by coach Bill Garrow,
showed good play -
reading and tackling
ability for the Vikings.
Frayneo John Clement
Reid in the Vikings' of-
fensive backfield.
Garrow also credited
middle guard John Huff
with playing his best
game of the season.
Running back Dino
Tyrovolas played a
strong game for the
Huskies, accounting for
most of the Stratford
offensive punch.
Today (Thursday) the
Vikings play host to the
Listowel Lords who have
a three win -two loss
record. The Vikings, who
are 5-0, play their final
game of the regular
season next Tuesday in
Exeter against the South
Huron Panthers who
were also unbeaten going
into their game today
with the Huskies.
