Thanks Ron
Dear Editor,
Last week I was very
pleased to see that Ron
Pennington has brought
some attention to the
seamen's plot in Maitland
Cemetery.
I have known about this
plot for many years and
on occasion have visited
the site. I sailed for a few
years but my father
sailed the Great Lakes
for many years.
Iwould like to thank
DEAR
Ron for bringing this
matter to Council's at-
tention and would like to
thank Council for going'
ahead in beautifying this
landmark.

A THANK YOU NOTE
TO MR. JEAN-CLAUDE
PARROTT AND
MR, PIERRE
TRUDEAU
I would like to express
my personal thanks to
CUPW and the Post-
EDITO
master General for
keeping all Canadians
informed as to the issues
at stake which have
culminated in the with-
drawal of services in the
post office. I believe it is
more commonly called a
strike!
As an unemployed
executive who depends
solely on the mails for
correspondence to and
replies from prospective
employers, the disruption
in mail service affects me
very much. But what can
I do?
I don't know what
constitutes the hundreds
of issues at variance
between the two sides,
therefore I cannot assist
my local MP in stating a
position that I would or
could support. It would
appear to me that if there
are so many unresolved
issues, the com-
munications between the
two sides must be
deplorable, if not non-
existent.

volved in an industry

69.49 percent. In the
secondary schools it is a
little less dramatic,
according to the figures
in the chart: 63.91 percent
in 1976; 63.75 in 1977 and
63.73 percent in 1978. For
the Huron Perth Roman
Catholic Separate School
Board elementary
schools the figures are
82.13 percent in 1976, 82.76
percent in 1977 and 79.80
percent in 1978.
By far the major
portion of the booklet
deals with the matter of
getting involved in the
upcoming municipal
election - and getting the
candidate of your choice
elected.
But a good deal of
emphasis too, is put on
the fact that less than 35
percent of the eligible
voters in a municipal
election ever get to the
polls in the average
election year.
Fortunately, Goderich
statistics , are con-
siderably better than that
- about 45 percent in the
last municipal election.
But it is true there must
be a tremendous effort
made to stir up interest
among voters - and to get
them out to the polls. It is
really as though people
believe their votes won't
make ,a difference - that
nothing can be changed
at town hall or at the
municipal office anyway.
The purpose of the
OSSTF brochure, is of
course, to encourage
teachers as well as other
individuals to partidipate
widely in local elections
either as candidates
themselves or as cam -

paign workers - and to
provide basic resource
material on the financial
crisis- which the OSSTF
believes is facing local
governments.
The brochure. says: As
concerned 0 -diens and
articulate and concerned
professionals, teachers
are urged to participate
actively in the November
13 elections by working
for and supporting good
incumbents, encouraging
good new candidates to
offer for office and
supporting thein, and
encouraging in general a
much better turnout of
voters on election day.
Surely no one can
dispute this kind of an
effort on the part of
secondary school
teachers. Shouldn't
everyone take a page out
of their book and get
involved, making ab-
solutely certain at least to
vote?
By the way, if anyone
wants a copy of the
booklet to which I refer in
where strikes ,are
outlawed by legislative
dictum, it is difficult for
me to comprehend the,
internal strife which
must exist between
labour and management
in the post office.
However, I am acutely
aware of the effect on the
public such actions
precipitate. Not only for
persons in my capacity,
but for the small
businessmen who depend
on a steady flow of cash

I would also like to
express my personal
thanks to Mr. .Jean-
Claude Parrott for the
position he has taken in
recommending to all
CUPW members. The
position I refer to is that
of defiance of the back -to -
work legislation enacted
by the Parliament of
Canada.
This certainly is a show
of "responsibility" on the
part of a union executive.
(I can only assume that

While there are in-
stances in our society
where inequities are
evidenced in labour -
management relations,
the demand (as published
by the Post Office) by the
Union for, as an example,
a shift -premium of $33.00
per hour in addition to
standard wage for work
on Sundays is so
ridiculous exhorbitant
that- it is• no wonder the
Government is fed up
talking on the issue.
What if other 'public
sector employees' such
as Nurses, who routinely
work on Sundays were
given the same shift
premium? You think our
economy is bad now, just
imagine that situation!
Yes, I would like to
thank all the CUPW
members, their
Executive of the Union
and the Federal
Government Negotiators
for keeping us so well
informed, and providing
us with the superlative
postal service we have
grown to expect.
However, our great
expectations arelpo often
shattered by the Fgality of
strikes, threatened
strikes and other postal
service disruptions.

which he 'proffered to
British businessmen a
