Depot bad OPEN LETTER Dear Mr. Mayor: I am directing this letter to you as I have a feeling that it may be thrown in the waste basket if addressed to your Chamber of Com- merce. Ir} our small city we have a clean little bus depot with carpeted floor (no skidding on bare, wet floors) a clean washrooni and a pleasant, helpful person in charge. Directly across the street is a amaiL restaurant clean - with excellent food at reasonable prices, open from. 5 am to 12 pm every day. Last week I had an elderly uncle from Stratford as my guest. When making arrangements I suggested he return on Sunday afternoon (bus 3:25 pm) instead of the earlier morning hour. He would also avoid crowds. There would be stop over in Goderich from 5:20 to 6:40 pm. With your splendid location I ex- pected good facilities at your bus depot. When he 'arrived, the person in charge was locking the door of the GEAR ELPIIT depot and informed him that it would not be open until his bus arrived in an hour. -No washroom facilities available - no place to rest - no direc- tions to a restaurant. There are few people on the streets on Sunday at that hour and for an elderly man, he knew it was not too safe to ask directions of those few. He dragged his heavy suitcase around the unfamiliar streets for an hour. All I can say is: "Thank God it wasn't raining." Travellers of one hundred years ago stopped at coach inns. Must i go back -to Biblical— times for comparison? Yes, Mr. Mayor, I am being sarcastic. I am expecting a phone call any minute telling me that my uncle has had a heart. attack. To be unaware of a situation like this in your city is as bad as being indifferent to it. For many years I was secretary of our Chamber of Commerce and am aware of g the lasting impression this must leave with travellers passing through your city. Our depot informs travellers of the few similar situations that exist in Northern Ontario. DeaxReaders... • from page 4 well under Liberal leadership. He had some statistics to back him up ... and a few choice examples of the kind of a mess Canada would be in if Joe Clark was at the nation's helm. Then came Ed Broadbent. The afternoon had been long at this point, which may have been the reason that even Broadbent'.s party members looked bored to tears. Or it could have been that Clark and. Trudeau had said everything before Broadbent got a chance to address the meeting. But Broadbent gave a. pitiful performance, for my money, and spent his valuable time railing.' against the prime minister being very. careful not to "throw in" with the leader of the official opposition. One thing Broadbent did say which I think expressed it all, was that for the first time in about four years, Trudeau appeared to., be "in fighting form". And dear readers, if that is true - if the , old Trudeau is stirring within the PM - prepare yourself for a treat, for when Pierre is at his best, there's not a politician in the land who cin match him for ability. • We had a little side trip into Collingwood one day and found that to be a most delightful town. Incidentally, there are lots of "delightful towns" in this province and plenty of competition''ioo, for the "Prettiest Town In Canada". Goderich has been blessed' with so much natural beauty, it is difficult sometimes to comprehend the need for man-made additions such as walkways and lights and benches and treescaping and gardens. Some of the towns we. visited were truly doing a - magnificent job to beautify and improve their streets, particularly in the downtown areas. Like Goderich, some were in the throes of renovation but even so, with a bit of imagination, one could see how at- tractive those com- munities would be once the change was complete. And in some places, where the work was finished, it was a hard- ship to keep moving when the desire was to get out of the car and explore. Goderich and area people are probably finding the changes on The Square a little disconcerting right now. But hang in there. Don't pass a final opinion, please, until the job is complete several years from now. The Municipal Elections Act. 1977 Posting Of Preliminary List of Electors for 1978 For the Municipality of the Township of Ashfield This Preliminary List of all Electors prepared as required by the Municipal Elections Act of 1977 was publicly posted in the office of the Municipal Clerk on the 21st day' of October, 1978. -Electors should examine the list to ensure that their names and relevant information are correctly shown. Application for Inclusions, additions or corrections to or deletions from the list may be made by an elector by completing and filing a form obtainable at the Office of the Clerk. The lest day for filing applications concerning additons, corrections or deletions: October 27th, 1978 DONALD M. SIMPSON Clerk, Township of Ashfield In fairness to other travellers, I have asked our depot to inform them off the sane situation in Goderich_ Evelyn Hair, Owen Sound. Not true Dear Editor: I should have thought that "that" kind of politicking was left behind a long time ago, at least in small towns - the kind of mindlessly ruthless fighting at any cost, by saying simply anything that costes to mind as useful, no matter h©w. ri atiote from the truth or lacking in sub- stance in the hope that someone just may believe it_ In other words, the kind of politics of which Mr. Jim Searls' letter in your last week's edition is an inufortunate example. Continuing his attacks against the Square area improvement and the majority . of the town council Mr. Searls says that 'We as taxpayers were led to believe that there would be no cost to the taxpayers as such_ Since this time the truth is finally coming out". That is a lie. Mr. Searls either deliberately resorts to a lie or he is not capable of understanding facts, figures, words and situations - and there is not much of a choice between the two alter- natives. The fact is that the cost sharing character and division of the project (between the Town and the B_I.A.) has been publicly and openly known and discussed from the very beginning. The presentations to Council were made at publicly open meetings, both orally and in written form; with copies available to anyone; the subject has been thoroughly fought over, the matter has had a great deal of newspaper coverage in which all the cost sharing factors were always mentioned - and here comes Mr. Searls saying "the truth is finally coming out"! This would indicate that Mr. Searls (who as he says has attended "nicety percent of all council meetings") only justrealized what everybody else knew all the time - the Town w always clearly sho as sharing certain of the project Furthermo , under the circumstances - what conclusions would one draw about Mr. Searle reasons for fighting against the Square from the beginning? The cost sharing principle was well known. The only thing that was not clearly known to anyone at the beginning and could not be possibly known until the tenders were received a few months ago, was the actual cost in dollars and cents to either party, and, -_that_ :_.information-.-w.as-- made public the minute it became available_ Asto the Square itself, some people favour the Your letter is welcome . improvements, some people oppose the idea and a small group might like to sabotage it. No major program was ever carried out._ to the com- plete bliss of everyone on the scene. At this stage the project deserves a chance. It would seem reasonable to keep an open mind- When it is finished, with trees, lights and flowers in place, chances are good that most people will find it attractive and an asset to our. town - If Mr. Searls differs, he is entitled to his opinions, views and thoughts and I am always prepared to -lend my ear -to any decent and constructive argument However, as far as I am concerned, Mr. Searls has no right to play games with well established facts. The documents and figures have been and are available to everyone in the Town Clerk's office. My friendly advice to Mr. Searls and his colleagues is that if one cannot fight with honesty and dignity, one should not fight at all_ Sincerely, Elsa Haydon Board studies moral education The Huron " County board of education agreed at its regular meeting Monday night in Clinton to study further the possibility of a moral education program in the county's schools. The board adopted Colborne and Goderich township trustee Shirley Hazlitt's motion asking the principals' association to study the need for a moral education program as presented to the board in September by Don Santos of the London board of education. The' program uses everyday moral problems to teach children skills to over- come moral dilemmas and develop self-esteem. Mr. Santos said in his preset on the program is aimed at "helping kids grow from self - orientation to concern for other persons." Mrs. Hazlitt suggested the principals study three questions concerning the program_ First, if there is a need for it in Huron, and if there is a need, what type off program would they su4est for schools_ The third question ,was whether the topic could be discussed at a - professional development day_ "I think the principals' association should comment on it _ _ . they are the ones who would know," she said. ®® MEM CO No running_ ' No rcmaliki ng_' No exercise. Please find enclosed a copy of a letter I recently sent to the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs, which I thought might be of interest to you_ Yourssincerely, R.E. McKinley, M.P. Huron -Middlesex. Honourable J.H: Faulkner, Minister of Indian & Northern Affairs, Dear Mr. Faulkner: It„has been brought to My "attention that your department is planning to replace the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada plaque on the gates to the town of Goderich, with a bilingual plaque. This plaque com- memorates the Pioneers of the Huron Tract, from 1828 to 1928, and was erected m 1919. I must advise you that the people of Goderich do not feel in this time of proposed restraint, that such a move in at all necessary.' In fact, there are so many other places where funds can be utilized that are much more necessary than the changing of these plaques to bilingual plaques. As a matter of fact, it is too much of this kind of thing that is causing the strong English-speaking resentment in our country. My constituency is a strong agricultural area, and when agriculture funding accounts for a little over one percent of the federal budget, and yet it gets six percent of the cut harks, it is little wonder that the people get riled up when they see this needless expense going on, and which has been going on since the election of Mr_ Trudeau as Prime Minister Please withdraw the intention to replace these plaques with bilingual ones and advise rage. Yours sincerely, R.E. McKinley, M.P. Huron -Middlesex. lith llnE cal :,- d'iina Five _piece place settings only.
