The Goderich Signal-Star, 1978-10-19, Page 2PAGE 2--GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY; OCTOBER 19,1978 a 77-5 Tid Bits,..Tid.. BY JOANNE BUCHANAN Rabies may increase above normal levels in parts of southern Ontario in the coming months. Natural Resources Minister James Auld said the 1978-79 season is the tenth year since the disease last occurred and there was a major out- break before that in 1958- 59. "If this ten-year cycle recurs, a peak can be expected this fall and winter," Auld said. Outbreaks of rabies have already occurred in Bruce, Carleton, Fron- tenac, Grey, Lanark, Leeds, Lincoln and Renfrew Counties, with red fox and striped skunk being the major carriers. So perhaps Goderich citizens should beware of skunks for a reason other than their smell. Auld said the rabid animals are frequently unusually tame, and any wild animal whose behaviour seems unusual should be avoided. He said that his wildlife biologists advise that if rabies is suspected, contact should be avoided even if the animal is dead. "However, if a spor- tsman does contact rabies, either through his own dog of by direct contact with a rabid "fox or skunk, a physician or veterinarian should be notified immediately," Auld added. + + + The Canada Employment and Immigration Com- mission has made emergency arrangements to get Unemployment Insurance benefit cheques to claimants because off the disruption in mail service. After the business session, they were treated to a delightful . program of music, (violin, piano; singing) and an off-the-cuff reminiscing by Archie Mann, who proved to be one of those persons who can regale their audience with truth and laughter for the old days, and as one story led to another, the members could visualize the unique community history of ti Moncrief unfolding. The village of Moncrief, on the 16th concession of Grey township got its name from Scotland, although the first settler was a French-Canadian. ' All of this has become memories and isn't it sad that Moncrief is no longer even a place to be found on our Ontario maps:, But these memories are alive and a delight to hear and record, and protected by the Huron County Historical Society. - by Isabel Theedom Olson's Gravel Pit Dungannon, Ontario WHOLESALE PRICES PER TON ' 100 TONS C GRAVEL FILL .15 B2 GRAVEL , .30 Bl GRAVEL .40.
