When
junk
was
junk
In the old days, junk
was junk. And the old
junk dealer was a poor
man with a family of half-
starved children. I
remember one who used
to come around to our
house once or twice a
year when I was a boy.
He would mend old pots
and pans for a mere
pittance, or sell you a
second-hand chair for a
nickel or a dime.
Not so today. Our
modern junk dealer has
raised his.. _status and i0
fact, some of them tower '
head and shoulders above
the ordinary citizen. We
call them "antique
dealers" and we almost
envy their ability to
'"antique" everything
they touch.
Take our nickel and
dime chairs for instance,
' the ones that were in
vogue when Queen
Victoria ascended to the
throne. Today they are
worth hundreds of
dollars.
A good example is the
churn that grandmother
made butter in many
years ago. She worked it
with a foot pedal, then
drained off the rich
buttermilk,' worked the
butter with a wooden
paddle in a wooden bowl
and how delicious it was.
Then there are those
broad axes that no one
knows how to handle any
more - they hewed many
a timber for both . house
and barn.
Other artifacts are an
old corn planter, a far cry
from our modern farm
equipment and a one-man
crosscut saw. This old
saw might have been a
muscle -builder, but it
wasalso' a back -breaker.
If anyone set out to cut
timber with one of them
today he would be
laughed to scorn. So they•
are now used only as
ornaments to adorn
fireplaces.
And then there are
those antique horse
collars, harries, straps, ..
buckles, belly bands,
whiffle trees, logging
chains and stable lan-
terns.
Talking about stable
lanterns reminds me of
the days when we had to
do our barn chores by
their dim light. And when
I think about those dim
days, I rejoice to think
that they are making
ornaments out of those
lanterns.
Sometimes I think
about the old oak table
that stood in our dining
room when I was a boy.
Oh, if I only had it now. I
would dip it, scrape it and
polish it. Then I would
sell it to the first lucky
person who came along
with more money than he
knew what to do with.
And what can I .say
about grandmother's old
rocking chair? The one
she rocked in for her
entire married life. To
think that she died
without knowing, that it
was worth $250, a whole
year's income in those
days.
The horse-drawn
plough, what is it good
for? Well, you would be
surprised. I know I was.
The old plows hold up
mail boxes. floWer urns,
old tin . pails and milk
cans. They are also used
as lawn ornaments along
with kitchen sinks, hand
pumps, wash boards,
wooden tubs and hand
wringers.
' By the way, if you ever
want to sell your
property, just put one of
those old ploughs out
front with a "For Sale"
sign on it.
We couldn't pass ' by
without mentioning
antiques .like canthooks, -
sickles, bedpans, ink
bottles, iron beds, love
seats, black frying pans;`
old sideboards, dressers,
commodes and whatnots. .
Another popular item is
the old potb flied \stove, i
Wad, id tha Muffed ot1t
its heat to those who stood'
really elose and froze
everyone else in the
room.
