Mrs. Joan Pope, newcomer to Goderich from England, says these dolls are as popular as teddy bears in England and are often one of the first toys a child has. It's difficult to explain exactly how they originated, she says. Along with stuffed animals these gollywogs will be featured at the Christmas Country Fair in Saltford on October 18 and 21. IODE plans bake sale The regular meeting of Ahmeek Chapter I.O.D.E. was held on Monday„ October 2 at the home of Mrs. ' A. Alexander, Britannia Road . The meeting opened with the Prayer of the Order and Mrs. R. Neville, Regent in the chair. The secretary's report for September followed and also the financial report. These were approved as read. A motion was made, seconded and', carried that the Chapter pur- chase the usual sized wreath from the Legion. A motion was made, seconded and carried also that the Chapter hold a bake sale on October 27 at the Suncoast Mall with Mrs. M. Auld as con- venor. A letter was read from the Town Clerk regarding a sign at each of the three entrances' to the town. The Service Convenor gave her report and had on display three layettes which the members admired. The area Vice - President's letter was read containing in- formation regarding the name "I.O.D.E." and used hearing aids. - A new member, Mrs. Douglas Henry, was welcomed by the Regant. The guest speaker, Mrs. M. Cutt, was then introduced and gave a very concise and in- teresting talk regarding the procedure for meetings and outlined the various duties of the officers. Mrs. M. Henderson thanked Mrs. Cutt for her most informative talk, enjoyed by all. She also thanked Mrs. Alexander for her hospitality and her two helpers who assisted with a delicious lunch. The flags were retired. The meeting then closed with God Save the Queen and Canada. The October meeting of Maple Leaf Chapter JODE was held at the home of Mrs. R. McDonald. Regent, Mrs. W Garrow, presided and both table flags were on display. . Education secretary, Mrs. R. McCallum, reported that the Regent had presented the Canadian Studies awards at GDCI Cominencement to Mary Lillian Simpson, year one and to Edward Turton.year two. Mrs. R. McGee read a delightful letter from the chapter's adopted Korean child, Jang Choon Sim. The chapter is happy to once again sponsor Jang Choon and to send her a Christmas gift. Mrs. McDonald, Ser- vices Convener, had on di-spla}F, some of the articles which will be sent in the bale to Provincial Headquarters for distribution. Many members are kept busy during the year sewing and knitting for this area of IODE work. • Ways and Means Convener, Mrs. J. McIntyre, reported on the successful Fashion Show held at Benmi.11er Inn. Mrs. C. Edward !moved a vote of thanks to Mrs. McIntyre and her committee for their excellent work in arranging this function. Mrs. Garrow read an article-- by Mrs. J. A. Vivash, Toronto Area Vice -President, IODE outlining the history of the IODE and the many areas of service that it covers. Citizenship secretary, Mrs. M. Campbell, also read a letter from lIIrs. Morley Keegan outlining the IODE stand on National Unity. The chapter voted to purchase a wreath for Remembrance Day and members were reminded that the church service will be held at Victoria Street United Church on Sunday, November 5, at 10-a. m. The November meeting will.be held at the home of Mrs. J. Stringer, 57 Si. David Street. A Canadian Quiz was conducted by Mrs. Garrow and this was enjoyed by the members. Mrs. Stringer thanked the hostess and lunch was served by Mrs. R. Robertson and Mrs. R. Breckenbridge.
