The Merchants have been playing in the South Huron Hockey League Intermediate D division for the past two years. The league operates as an independ ent and this year will play in the Intermediate C grouping. The league, which is not sanctioned. by -the OHA, has been operating n Godench for the past eight years and. this marks the third season the Merchants have been in the league. Team Manager, Ken Fagan, said the league was formed to provide Competitive hockey for players over the minor hockey age lipiit. But he added, that since the inception of the league eight years ago,_ the calibre of play has in- creased tremendously. `The league will feature nine teams in a 24 game interlocking schedule. The league teams in- clude, Centralia College Saints, Goderich, Hen - sail, Parkhill', Grand Bend, Thedford, Zurich, Kettle Point and Cen- tralia. Goderich will begin heir 24 game schedule Monday October 23 with a home game. The league schedule had not been finalized but each team will play a home and home series with the other teams in the league plus an ad- ditional third game with each team. The home ice advantage for that third game will alternate each) year. r Last year the !Mer- chants finished fifth in the eight team league but Fagan claimed the team is more balanced this year and will un- doubtedly be more competitive. The team may have lacked depth in the past two" "}ears ""but'"` certain playhrs made their mark in the league. Ron Corriveau was chosen as the top defenceman in the league last year, an honor he has matron for two straight years, Paul Corriveau was second in league scoring last year and Ron Whetstone finished in the top ten iri .scoring for the league. Since the league is independent, all teams and players pay their own way and league games are handled by the South' Huron . The Mustangs will play in the OHA Central Jr. "C" group again this year while Mitchell should be a strong contender in the OHA Western Jr. "D" group. The Mustangs got on the scoreboard early in the first period as they outscored their op- position 4-1. Neil Colquhoun opened_ the scoring followed by Dave Stephenson and Paul •Priestap to take an early three goal lead. Mit- chell's Jim Hislop got the visitors on the board late in the period and Mike Gibbing' finished off the first period scoring in the last minute of play. Some members work shift work and are unable to attend the first week. All indications are that the club should hit a new high in membership .this season. The new location , at Victoria Public School turned out to be excellent and I would like to thank Mike Dymond and the Victoria School Board for making this room available to us. I would like to welcome two new members to the club this season. Mark Russell and Mike Moriarty Jr Mark and Mike found . the com- petition a bit tough in their first week but both showed the talent necessaryto win many games with the club. Steve Hammill, Jim Kingsley and Doug Brindley got off to the best start this season with two wins while John Kloeze, Chas. MacDonald and Jim Gower won their only games of the evening. Larry Gower got off to a good start also with two , wins in three games. Kirk Lyndon and Louis Stadelmann got tied up in a long close battle which was adjourned at the end of the evening; Also Brian Miller looks very strong this, season as he gave Charlie MacDonald a real battle in their first game of the season.
