THURSDAY" OCTOBER5. 1978 BNPD unit near Enriching unit four at Bruce Heavy Water Plant B at the Bruce Nuclear P.ower Development (BNPD) is nearly completed and should begin to produce heavy water by mid-October according to BNPD spokesman Don White. Mr. White said a one and one half percent concentration of hydrogen sulphide has been introduced into the unit. Hydrogen sulphide is used in the heavy water production process. "Following this, a week long series of tests and checks will be made on the flanges, valves and seals of the unit, to ensure there are no leaks," Mr. White said. After the tests have been completed, Mr. White said the unit will be purged of all "that's in there" by venting the mixture up the fjare stack. "When this happens, there could be an odour that nearby residents will notice," Mr. White said. Hydrogen sulphide gas smells like rotten eggs. After the unit has been purged, Mr. White said its will be filled with 100 percent hydrogen. sulphide and the piping system will be put through a pre- conditioning process that, will last about three 'weeks. "So, by mid to late October, enriching unit four will be producing some heavy water," Mr. White said. KEY TO SYSTEM Heavy water is the key to Canada's nuclear power system. It is the medium. in which natural uranium atoms produce steam -raising heat to churn electric generators. This moderating fluid also 'serves as coolant, transferring heat from the nuclear reactor to the generator steam system. About 200 gallons is needed for every megawatt of generating capacity installed. You drink - the equivalent of a glass of heavy water in every 7,000 glassfuls of water you consume. What makes it different is that the hydrogen is heavier. Heavy Hydrogen (deuterium) makes heavy water, or deuterium oxide. This denser fluid slows down neutrons, those atomic core • fragments that trigger nuclear activity. Moderately slow moving neutrons split uranium atoms to ping off other neutrons. Heat is produced in the process. The heat makes steam to 'spin the turbine - generators •for elec- tricity. This Canadian nuclear power system,, using natural uranium (,yvithout enrichment), is one of two routes to electricity that were spun off from the wartime atomic bomb project. While Enrico Fermi at Chicago used graphite blocksto moderate neutrons in enriched nuclear fuel an, Anglo -French-Canadian team at Montreal' used heavy water with low grade uranium. The heavy water has proven about eight times more effective than graphite in moderating neutron activity. Canadians stayed with the natural uranium - deuterium oxide system. It. paid off when Candu reactors began producing power in the .,1970s at Ontario ' Hydro's Pickering station with 99 - percent reliability. The - heavy water is expensive to produce but there are commensurate fuel savings in not having to enrich the uranium.
