feel that they have what it
takes to play the role of a
crabby king, a good fairy
or an ugly sister? If so,
you are wanted by the
Goderich Little Theatre
group for their upcoming
production of Cinderella
to be performed on

promises an amusing
twist to the traditional
fairy tale. Brian Markson
off Goderich has put his
talent to work once again
with this production. He
wrote it and he will direct
it as well.
The play is a pan-
tomime -not to be con-
fused with that silent
form of acting also known
as mime or pantomime.

Markson has written, are

his native country and
they are beginning to
catch on in Canada too,
he says. Pantomimes are
always based upon fairy
tales. In England, all the
big pantomimes open on
Boxing Day and run for
about three weeks.
• Everyone looks forward
to them.
In pantomime there are
always two certain
characters besides the
others. One, referred to
as Buttons, explains to
the audience what is
happening in quick
summary forms and the
other character
represents the audience
itself.
Markson describes
Cinderella as family-
light-hgarted en-
tertainment. The play
also feature's musical
numbers with lyrics
written by Markson-and
music by Phil Main Jr. of
Goderich. GLT is looking
for a piano accompanist
and a chorus for the play.
Anna Melski will be
choreographer.
"The play would be
nothing without the
chorus,— explains
Markson who says those

roles throughout the play.

LIKES WRITING
Markson isn't sure
what inspired him to
write Cinderella pan-
tomime. Writing is
something he has always
enjoyed and Cinderella is
not the first play he has
written. Last year GLT
performed Shamalot, a
spoof on Goderich written
by Markson for the
town's 150th ,t,birthday.
About ten years ago, GLT
performed Barnaby, a
type of pantomime based
on Babes In Toyland, also
written by Markson.
In 1967 Markson wrote
a play for Canada's
Centennial which he
updated again in 1975 for
Canada Week entitled
What's In A Nartie. He
also- wrote a short play
entitled „Faith Is....A__Sure.
Bet for GLT's summer
program this year.
In March of this year
Markson had six poems
published in England. He
had also written some
short stories which have
never been published.
FAMILY GETS
_ INTO ACT
The Marksons have
lived in Goderich since
1968. Mrs. Beth Markson
will be familiar to GLT
audiences as she has
acted in numerous plays.
Greg, the Markson's
oldest son has done
theatre in Goderich,
London and Toronto. Son
Andy writes music and,
sings. He has a band
called By Special
Appointment. The
Markson's two daughters
Karen and Doreen also do
some acting and were
seen on the GLT stage
this summer. The whole
family acted in Shamalot
except for Greg.
MANY CHARACTERS
Cinderella has a lot off
characters in it and by -
contrast, another play to
be presented by GLT this
season has only two
characters. Markson is
hoping he will have a
sufficient number of
p.eople Jo make..up ...the
cast of the play. If anyone
is interested, don't be
shy. Just show up at
MacKay Hall (down-
stairs) at 8 p.m. on
October 10 and 11.
Besides the principal
characters and the
chorus, backstage people
are needed as well. It's a
good opportunity to get
.involved.. i
• The, last line in Cn-
derella is, "Dick
Whittington and his
cat...ah, but that's
another story" and
Markson says he may
contemplate writing that
other story sometime
depending on how well
Cinderella goes over.
There are so many
pantomimes which can
be done, he says.
GLT EXECUTIVE
GLT held the first
meeting off the season on
September 27 with about
20 interested people
present. Frank Bissett is
this year's president;
Arie Van Der Ende is
vice-president; Kathy
Jenkins is recording
secretary; Jacqueline
White is treasurer; Anna
Melski is in charge of the
membership drive;
Clarence Knight is
publicity chairman and
1\21griel Reinhart. tap
agreed to act as
corresponding secretary
until someone else can be
found.
The play following the
Cinderella production is
entitled The Four Poster
and will be directed by
Eleanor Robinson. The
third and final play of the
season has yet to be
announced.
