Round `n'Abaut
Have you noticed that
the little Blue Shop - the
corner of East St. and
The Square, is missing?
It was Maurice Gardners'
Real Estate office - I
believe - then later that
handy, dandy ice cream
stand that stayed open
after 9 o'clock nites.
They sold you good big
cones for a fair price
second only to the ones
you could buy at the old
Craigie Store on The
Square.
Last week I was parked
at the Bank of Montreal
when I noticed a lot of
activity across the street
at The Little Blue Shop. It
was about to be moved!
The Maple.. Lane
Transport carried away
the contents of the shop
then the big lift fork -from
DRMC (Champion) took
over.
This was a BIG
machine. It lifted the
shop enough on one side
to set a pry under, backed
out, set the forks on the
ground and went under
the building Lifting it like
it was a doll house.
A truck with a flat bed -
a long low trailer,,
anyway -stood by and the
men laid four palettes on
it after measuring
carefully the length of the
wee shop. The big `fork'
came out - more to the
middle of the street - a
car could barely pass by -
Martha Rathburn ap-
pears weekly in The
Signal -Star
but they managed - didn't
even hold up that 10 a.m.
trafff on East St.
The flat bed was
backed up and swung
around. The Little Blue
Shop was set gently on
the palettes. So smooth
and easy - looking, thanks
to the fork lift operator.
I would • have liked to
see them taking it off the
truck - I'll bet it wasn't
quite that smooth. But the
windows and frame of the
u shop seemed to be ok to
begin the journey to its
winter resting place and I
enjoyed watching the
whole operation... and
that real smooth
operator, whoever he
might be.
Last Saturday and
'Sunday was open house at
the old historic Van
Egmond place in
Seaforth. What a fine old
house. The folks who are
working so hard to
restore it must be
congratulated - and
encouraged - for. the big
task, still ahead of them.
Agnes Moon , a fine
artist working mostly
with oils, Ari Van Der
Ende with his nice work
and myself - with quite a
variety of oils- and water
colors; had three rooms
on the second floor to
display our work.
My room overlooked
the back yard where on
Sunday I, could watch a
wagon load of apples
being crushed to become
beautiful cider. The fire
was going under the huge
iron pot and cider was
being . heated. They put
the cider in a large
enamelled pot then set it
in water in the big old
iron pot.
The cider was
beautifully seasoned and
I enjoyed my first glass -of
hot cider. I understood
that thick slices' of
homemade bread
smothered with apple
butter and cottage cheese
is a great old German
recipe.
I intend to buy some
"homemade" bread and
slather it with the apple
butter from Seaforth -
and top it with the cottage
cheese and I'm sure I'll
enjoy it.
I didn't get over to the
Public School where they
had their demonstrations
and crafts but I heard it
was very good. You could
also get food there - which
I didn't know until it was
tithe to leave.
Luckily cider is very
nutritious, so • with a
couple of rufins 1
bought at the bake sale on
the front lawn, I survived
the no lunch afternoon.
The traffic was rather
light , on Saturday but
Sunday was very busy.
Outdoors the Flea Market
with its variety of items,
the bake sale, draws,
pottery and plant section.
were Large and beautiful.
1 had a few of my
paintings that 1 had done
in the forties or .early
fifties and some of these
spots painted again in the
last year or so to create a
topic of conversation.
Without this it is hard to
believe the great changes
that have been made.
The greatest change of
course is shown at our
harbour where only tWo
small houses remain of
all the buildings after a
span of 28 years or more.
Of course - after 28
years there is a great
change in all of us - but I
think we expect buildings
to last forever. It is a pity
that some buildings are
not renovated and cared
for.
The buildings built by
the real old stone masons
and other craftsmen who
really took pride in their
work should be handled
with T.L.C. so that they
MAY last for centuries.
But we, will have very
few of these to show our
great grand -children -
and it seems a pity that
we have. to go to the
continent to see old
buildings.
Well, now, you have the
