But there are certain gardening practises and, indoor plant care that can gave green thumbers en- joyment all year round. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food has put together a package called The Gardener's winter gardenias, Guide, Fall 1978, con- taining much useful in- formation along these lines. + + + Now that fall has ap- proached, it is time to prepare trees and shrubs for the, coming winter. While most woody plants are capable of fending for themselves, afew require special attention. Evergreen plants lose moisture through their leaves during the winter, so it is important to have 7. Real estate for sale enough moisture in the soil for roots to take up water. Thoroughly water all trees and shrubs in November before the ground freezes. This is especially important for foundation plantings, under eaves, which do not 'receive'"" a,dequa%r"air► fall. Water sparingly from early September until late October. Continued heavy watering during the fall causes high moisture levels which can result in more winter - kill. Fertilizing trees and shrubs in the fall requires accurate timing. If ap- plied too early, fertilizer may stimulate new growth.which will winter - kill. If applied too late, the. nutrients will not be absorbed by the roots and may be leached from the root zone before "spring. Fall feltilfzation is not recommended. Wait and fertilize early into spring. Evergreen shrubs growing in open locations, exposed to southern sun and prevailing winds, should be given some, protection. Burlap or evergreen boughs, such as spruce or cedar, can be used to protect shrubs. They will MORTGAGE MONEY DON DENOMME Would like to HELP YOU arrange a 1st or 2nd Mortgage at prime rates. Wrap burlap around upright shrubs or attach it to stakes driven into the soil around the shrub. Protect groups of dwarf conifers in beds, using boughs supported by a wooden frame. This prevents the weight of snow from crushing them. Never wrap plants in sheets of polyethylene. This material traps heat on sunny days and prevents air circulation. Some chemicals called antitranspirants, such as Wilt Pruf or Folicote, can be sprayed on the foliage of evergreens. This film prevents windburn and "desiccation; particularly on broad -leafed evergreens: When using these chemicals, follow the label directions regarding dilution and air temperature required for application. Small shrubs, planted beside house foundations or along driveways where snow accumulates, should have slated wooden roofs placed over them. Mesh sleeves, often used on Christmas trees, can be pulled over taller upright evergreens to prevent snow from breaking branches. Hybrid roses require protection in most areas of Ontario. Several inches of soil should be mounded around the base of the bushes. Straw or leaves can be placed • around bushes after the ground has frozen. If applied before freeze-up, mice will be attracted. Branches or other suitable material placed on the straw,' will hold it in place. Plants can be damaged by salt spray from major streets and highways. Beech, willow, white cedar, white pine and* dogwoods seem to be most susceptible to jury. ;A ough you' cannot effectively prevent injury; ah- tidesiccants may help. Small specimens can be protected by a solid physical barrier placed. between the plants and the road. Mice and rabbits can be a nuisance in rural properties - they eat bark from the stems of shrubs and trunks of young trees. Poison bait will help control mice. Tree guards or wire mesh, stretched around the trunks of fruit'trees and yotibg shade trees, will provide protection. Commercially prepared repellants, painted on lower branches and stems of trees and shrubs may also reduce rodent damage. +++ It's fall and some people may be tired of gardening. However, this is an excellent time to plant trees ..and shrubs. Plants that grew vigorously in the nursery during the summer, are now strong and healthy for transplanting. Evergreens can be planted successfully until freeze-up but the ideal time isSeptember. At this time of year, plants produce new roots in preparation for winter. If planted in early Sep- tember, these roots will be established by winter and will be able to withstand extreme temperatures and high' winds. Deciduous trees and shrubs also transplant well in the fall. For best results, plant after the leaves have fallen. The first killing frost loosens the leaves and then plants are ready for tran- splanting. Unlike plants grown in the nursery field, plants grown in containers all summer can be planted throughout the growing season. September and October are ideal. The heat of summer is past and fall rains promote rapid acclimatization to new surroundings. In the fall, trees or shrubs should be planted in protected locations,,, sheltered from winter winds. Wind will quickly dry and destroy them. If you intend to plant inan open windswept location, wait for spring. However, you can buy the plants in the fall. Dig a trench and heel the plants in the ground for winter. When the ground is fit in spring, the plants can be moved to a permanent location. Use the same planting methods in the fall as in the spring. Dig a hole the correct size, use good topsoil, water well and plants will grow vigorously the following spring. -I- ++ Landscape design is the art of using outdoor space with imagination. Con- struction materials should not overpower plant material. They should_ baljance._.._each,, otter. Native plants are, important to any garden because they are adapted to climate and soil: Gardens should be designed for family living. Children should be considered. Many types of imaginative equipment is now available. Clim- bing ladders, slide down poles and even monkey bars can be constructed quite inexpensively. Small pools can be iri- cluded but they are a hazard to -small children and must be designed with extreme caution. They should be located where constant super- vision is available. Sand never stays in its allotted place. Therefore, pave around the sandbox so it is easier to sweep the overflow bac15. • When choosing a landscape design, analyze your requirements first. Do you want your 'car close to the house? Do you want privacy outdoors and a play area with equipment for children? What about a vegetable garden or greenhouse? What about protection from insects at ,„night, a place for en- tertaining, an area for barbecues and._ stprage_ for garden and play equipznent? Make a plan. Select the correct plants for your design. Large shrubs under windows may require expensive pruning. Shrubs planted too closely together may cause problems. When developing "your plan, draw your horse to scale on square -line paper, 1/4 inch to the foot. When developing outdoor areas, use materials that. complement the house. Keep the design simple. The approach area should be uncluttered but need not be large. The second area, the private area, is the centre for family activities. Here, the use of .screens, walls or fences will help. Fences are useful not only for privacy but they also support vines and serve as a background for plants. The service area can incorporate the vegetable garden,- clothes line, children's play area and garbage storage. These areas tend to be messy and should be screened. Design with main- tenance in mind, making bed lines simple. Select • plants that do not require much pruning or winter protection. Paved areas demand less work than grass. Consider the use of night lighting. It is at- tractive, fairly inex- pensive and allows longer use off the garden. A house without plants is unfinished. Buy plants from a reputable nur- sery. Choose them for their texture, season of bloom, color of bloom and year-round interest. Check their moisture requirements, their ability to withstand sun, wind or shade, their resistance to disease or insects and their form and rate of growth. + + Many flowers from _both garden _and -. sicoun tryde can be dried and used to make inexpensive floral arrangements to be enjoyed all year round, There are many methods of drying flowers. However, the two most common are air drying and ' silica -gel drying. Air drying is the simplest and oldest method of preserving flowering materials but it is not suited to all species. Remove only the foliage from flowering stems. Then, hang the stems upside down in.a warm; dry place until they have lost all their moisture. Plants with very little moisture content in the mature flower, such as Turn to page 20 • Common flowers and plants can be used to make attractive floral arrangements. This arrangement uses air-dried cattails, yarrow, dock and other familiar plant materials. The Norfolk Island Pine makes an ideal Christmas tree for people who enjoy a live tree, but who can't justify a cut tree each year.
