BY TD
The GDCI Senior
Vikings opened defence
of their Huron -Perth
Conference .football
championship with an
impressive 53-0 victory
over Stratford Central
Ramblers here last
Thursday.
Veteran Dave
MacKenzie showed his
versatility, scoring two
touchdowns from his
offensive end position,
another while playing
defence and one as a
member of the Vikings'
kickoff return team:
All four of the talented
MacKenzie's majors
were long -gainers. In the
first quarter he went 47
yards on a pass and run
play from quarterback
Jon Barz. That was just a
warm-up tor an 80 -yard
pass and run combo in the,
second quarter. This time
Dennis Donnelly was on
the throwing end of the
play. MacKenzie
returned the opening
kickoff of the second half
95 yards for his third
touchdown and in-
tercepted an errant
Stratford pass and
rambled 50 yards for his
final major in the fourth
quarter. .

Steelers win regional game
The Huron County Pee,
Wee soccer team "The
Huron Steelers" may be
on their way to Toledo,
Ohio as a result of win-
ning the zone final of the
Ohio cup last Saturday.
This year, teams from
Ohio, Wisconsin,
Michigan and Southern
Ontario were divided into
six zones, but only four
teams out of the six zone
winners will advance to
the semi-finals and final '
games to be played in
Toledo on Thanksgiving
weekend. The four teams
will be picked on their
goal averages so the
"Steelers" may not make
it.
Although undefeated,
they have 13 goals for and
two against giving them a
goal spread of 11.
In the zone final played
in Goderich last Satur-
day, the "Steelers"
downed their old rivals
Petrolia 4-1.
As in all of the other
games, the "Steelers had
complete control and
Clinton's Billy Tugwell
opened the scoring at the
15 minute mark. Five
minutes later Dave
Murray of St. Columban
got the first of his two
goals and by beating the
Petrolia keeper again
with a fine 18 -yard drive
just before half time, he
made the score 3-0.
In the early minutes of
the second half, Petrolia
was awarded a penalty
shot and made no
mistake, making the
score 3-1. Colin

touchdowns, both came in
the fourth quarter.
Eric Mitchell kicked
two field goals from
distances of 25 and 15
yards and hoofed three
converts for a, total of
nine points. The Vikings
picked up two more
points on a two-point
conversion pass from
Barz to Donnelly_
The Vikings' offence
performed well, showing
good execution and crisp
blocking. Defensively,
the Vikings played --well
as a unit, except for the
pass rush which coach
Ray Donnelly judged as
somewhat less than
impressive.
Perry Teichert had an
outstanding gme on
defence from his inside
linebacking position.
The Vikings next game
is being played today,
Thursday, in Palmerston
against Norwell District
Secondary School.
The Vikings team
captain this season is Jim
VanOsch, with co -
captains Dave
MacKenzie, Perry

last Thursday, Norwell

last Thursday.

first quarter, the other on
a 25 -yard pass and run
play from quarterback
Steve Gallow in the fourth
quarter.
Brian "Buckwheat"
Shewfelt scored one
Viking touchdown on a
three -yard tailback blast
in the final quarter. The
other Viking major came
when Steve Walters

quarterback sacks from
his defensive end
position.

three singles and three
converts to add six points
to the Vikings' total. The
other Viking points came
on a two-point conversion
pass from Gallow to
Larry Madge.
Defensively, the
Vikings were strong
throughout the game.
The offence had its
moment. but appeared to
falter, especially in the
third quarter. Part of this
was due to the absence of
the Vikings' leading
rusher, , Mike Wedlock
who suffered bruised ribs
in the second quarter.
.Wedlock had picked up 80
yards prior to his
departure. Shewfelt ran
for 44 yards and Madge
got 32 yards on four
carries. Quarterback
Gallow gained 25 yards
running while Frayne
had 33 yards riushing to go
with his 35 yards gained
